SETTLEMENT REACHED IN VETERANS LAWSUIT
OTTAWA – NDP Veterans Affairs critic Peter Stoffer (Sackville – Eastern Shore) is pleased that a nearly five-year battle between the federal government and Canadian veterans is coming to a close with the approval of an $887-million settlement.
“I am pleased that this matter is being resolved and our veterans who bravely served Canada are finally getting their due in this regard,” said Stoffer. “I am however quite disappointed that it took a prolonged court battle for the Conservatives to do the right thing.”
A 2007class-action lawsuit filed on the grounds that the government practice of clawing back veterans’ disability benefits is unfair was eventually joined by 7,500 veterans across Canada. A May 2012 federal court ruling found that the government’s actions defeated the purpose of providing compensation for disabling injuries suffered by Canadian Forces Members while serving Canada.
“This important case will not only help those currently receiving benefits but those who will unfortunately need them in the future,” said deputy Veterans Affairs critic Sylvain Chicoine (Châteauguay – Saint-Constant). “I salute our soldiers for not only having the courage to stand up for what’s right on the battlefield, but also here at home.”

DES ANCIENS COMBATTANTS OBTIENNENT ENFIN JUSTICE
OTTAWA – Le porte-parole du NPD en matière d’anciens combattants, Peter Stoffer (Sackville – Eastern Shore), est heureux que la bataille entre le gouvernement fédéral et les anciens combattants du Canada, qui a duré presque cinq ans, se termine enfin avec une entente de règlement de 887 millions de dollars.
« Je suis heureux que cette histoire se règle enfin et que nos anciens combattants qui ont servi notre pays avec courage puissent finalement obtenir gain de cause, a dit Peter Stoffer. Toutefois, je suis déçu qu’il ait fallu une bataille juridique aussi longue pour convaincre les conservateurs de faire la bonne chose. »
En 2007, 7 500 anciens combattants de partout au Canada se sont joints à un recours collectif, initié par Dennis Manuge, pour lutter contre le fait que le gouvernement réduisait systématiquement et injustement leurs prestations d’invalidité. En mai 2012, une décision de la Cour fédérale avait trouvé que les gestes du gouvernement étaient contraires à l’objectif même des indemnités devant servir aux anciens combattants ayant subi des blessures invalidantes en service.
« Cette cause importante va aider ceux qui reçoivent des prestations en ce moment, mais aussi ceux qui en auront besoin un jour, a dit le porte-parole adjoint en matière d’anciens combattants, Sylvain Chicoine (Châteauguay-Saint-Constant). Je salue nos soldats qui ont eu le courage de se battre sur le champ de bataille, mais aussi ici, au Canada. »
