Tough questions: I recently met with a group of tech CEOs from across Africa and the Middle East. Had a wonderful dialogue about whether it is dangerous in some of their countries to encourage the employees to be more candid. "What if they take skills home and are beaten for using them with their husband?" one CEO from West Africa asked. What do you think? If you know you need greater candor to improve your organization – should you avoid encouraging it if it conflicts with local culture?

Keith arrived back in Calgary on the 3rd, better late than never, after being snowbound in camp and unable to chopper out. We bonded with a kiss, and hit the ground running, with many an errand to do. By late evening, Keith had a haircut, and some dress clothes from Value Village. Thanks to Kijiji, we’d also managed to find a bathroom sink and lined up a new member of our growing farm family, Finnegan, a very well-behaved ‘rescue dog’ that had been lovingly cared for by a young family (they’ve kindly offered to hold on to him for us until we’re ready to head back to Saskatchewan at the end of the month). We headed off to bed, exhausted, but thrilled to be together again (and able to breathe a sigh of relief, having just received our stamped engineer plans…another construction milestone).
The next morning we were on flight to Vancouver to take in the 2013 Canada International Film Festival. Thanks to a bit of planning, and some luck, the hotel we chose was only a few blocks away from our SkyTrain stop, ‘happening’ Robson Street, and the facilities where they were holding the various festival events. We were joined for meals by family and friends…Corwin and Jaz on Thursday, and my cousin Jay on Saturday. The ‘screenwriter/filmmaker networking diner’ on Friday was enlightening to say the least, especially since Keith and I were new to this sort of thing. We were fortunate enough to spend the diner sitting across from Sonya Salomaa and Amy Jo Johnson, both of whom have been in the industry for a number of years. It was a wonderful meal accompanied by heartfelt, candid conversation. On Saturday, we were able to take in a number of short films, along with the awards ceremonies later that night. The presenters we adamant that everyone receiving an award know that their work had been chosen from literally THOUSANDS of international entrants, and that the winning projects were “the best that they’ve seen in the past 3 years”. There were recipients from all over the world…Australia, Iran, Greece, France, South America, and Asia, to name just a few. We returned to Calgary on the 7th, and picked up a copper kitchen sink (saved 75% on Kijiji) on the way home. This morning, we took delivery of our ‘made in Canada’ compost toilet (bought on sale, saving us $500). We’re finally working on getting out plans out to the various subcontractors, Rural Municipality of Lakeview, and building inspector, for review. I’m guessing the rest of the week will be a blur, as we’ve both managed to write up extensive ‘to do’ lists. I’ll update you the next time we take a breather. Cheers everyone!

Honesty is probably the most important player in your fitness journey.

As a whole, human nature is to deceive each other. If I wear black, then I will be perceived as skinner. If I eat this sugar free product or granola bar, then I will be outwardly doing good. How far do you go in order to outwardly meet your goals while internally you are slacking.

Be honest with yourself, I call my training plans JOURNEYS for a reason. The process is lengthy and the road is paved with temptations and curveballs. Surround yourself with people that will encourage and support your needs. Look at yourself objectively in the mirror, do not put yourself down when you take a mis-step but allow that seed of doubt spark change.

When making changes to support your goals, make them obtainable. Keep yourself accountable to someone outside your family (spouses rarely work) be completely candid.

This week I challenge you to be honest with yourself about food choices. If you don't buy it you can not consume it. Each time you feel like eating something processed, look up the cost and set aside the money you would spend on it. Put it in a envelope marked "Renovations" you will be surprised at how quickly the money adds up. This will force honestly for two reasons, one you will quickly see how many times you unwillingly sabotage your goals. If you are actively engaged in your choices you will be able to take the steps to put yourself back in line. Wouldn't you rather take that money and use it for something to benefit you. New outfit? De-stress day?
