'Campaigners 38 Degrees to protest against NHS changes in Cheltenham'
Gloucestershire Echo
Apr 5th, 2013
PROTESTERS will take to the streets of Cheltenham tomorrow to voice their opposition to local NHS changes.
Members of health campaign group 38 Degrees will march through the town centre tomorrow, starting at the Lido car park in Sandford Park at 11.30am, and they are inviting people across Gloucestershire to join them.
They will be protesting against plans to take critically ill patients in the borough to the A&E department in Gloucester between 8pm and 8am, instead of Cheltenham General Hospital. This is because emergency medical doctors would be based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
38 Degrees belief that NHS services as a whole are being "privatised" is another reason for the demonstration in the borough. David Perry, an organiser for 38 Degrees, said: "The protest march will focus on the immediate impacts in Gloucestershire such as the downgrading of accident and emergency services in Cheltenham, which are already not coping.
"We are looking for all concerned citizens who support the principle of a publicly funded and provided NHS to join us at Sandford Park Lido at 11.30am on Saturday and march through the High Street and Promenade.
"Unless the English people fight for their precious health service now, it will be all but gone in five years."
Dr Tom Llewellyn, emergency medicine consultant at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, defended the proposed changes.
He said: "Our priority is to ensure that the sickest patients are seen by very skilled specialist staff when they need to be. To do this, we need to ensure that those specialist staff are available to respond to patients and the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The hospitals trust is facing increasing pressures as, nationally, recruitment into emergency medicine remains extremely challenging.
"From August 2013, there is no guarantee that the trust will have the number of doctors they currently have so they need to plan responsibly to ensure patient safety. The changes we are proposing to make at this time relate to services at Cheltenham General Hospital at night time only." {-_-}
