'Warning and Advice after Device is Found on Bath Road Cash Point'
by Gloucestershire Constabulary (Notes).

Thursday, 28 March 2013 at 14:04

Police in Cheltenham are urging shoppers to check cash points for anything suspicious before taking out cash.

The message comes after reports that a fraudulent device may have been used on two cash points on the Bath Road in the town last week.

It appears as though a device was used on the cash machine outside Lloyds TSB between March 20 and March 22 and that a similar device was used on the cash point outside Natwest between March 25 and March 27.

The banks and Gloucestershire Police have received a number of complaints that these two machines were keeping debit and credit cards and that money had been withdrawn from their accounts after.

The policing team for the area are urging the community to be vigilant when using cash points as devices are not always immediately obvious, but can be spotted with a closer look.

If you have used either of these machines in the last week and spotted irregularities on your account please report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040.

It’s not yet known exactly how many people have fallen victim to this scam or how much money has been stolen but Gloucestershire Police are investigating and ask anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity around these two ATMs over the last week to report it to them by calling 101 and quoting incident number 99 of March 22.

If you want to give information but don’t want to give your name you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Information can also be given via their website www.crimestoppers-uk.org and you may receive a reward if someone is arrested and charged.

Gloucestershire Police suggest cardholders follow these key pieces of advice when using cash points:
Put your personal safety first. Be aware of others around you and if someone is behaving suspiciously cancel the transaction and use a different machine.
If you notice anything unusual about the cash machine, or there are signs of tampering, do not use it and report it to the bank or the Police as soon as possible.
Do not accept advice about using the cash point from seemingly well-meaning strangers and never allow yourself to be distracted.
Once you have completed a transaction put your money and card away before leaving the cash machine.
If the cash machine does not return your card, report its loss immediately to your card company. {-_-}

'Rapes trial: Court told of attack on teenager'

Gloucestershire Echo

Mar 28th, 2013

A JURY in the trial of a man accused of two charges of rape was yesterday told that he sexually attacked a 14-year-old Cheltenham girl in a school playground.

Gloucester Crown Court was shown a video of a police interview with the teenager in which she said Rico Palmer had grabbed her by the hair and sexually assaulted her.

Palmer, of Charles Street, Gloucester, has denied raping a 28-year-old woman on July 21 last year and stealing her mobile phone from her in a separate attack.

The 21-year-old has also denied raping the 14-year-old in Gloucester city centre three months later on October 25.

In the video interview, the teenager told how she had gone with a friend on the bus from Cheltenham to Gloucester to meet with two 15-year-old boys they knew from school.

She and her friend had hung around with the boys in a shopping centre before they met Palmer.

She said the two girls went with Palmer to the ASDA supermarket and waited outside while he bought cigarettes and cider. The trio then went to a school playground nearby.

The girl said Palmer gave them some cider to drink and then asked her age and whether she was a virgin.

He then asked the girl's friend if she wanted to make some money by meeting some friends of his in a supermarket car park, the court heard. The teenager said that when they were alone Palmer grabbed her by the hair and assaulted her.

She said she was scared and told Palmer to "get off", and he then told her not to tell anyone what had happened.

Screens

Giving evidence from behind screens in the witness box, the girl denied defence barrister John Caudle's suggestion that Palmer had never asked her age and that her friend had been with her throughout her time in the playground.

The girl replied "no" when Mr Caudle suggested she had made up the story of anything sexual happening between her and the defendant.

She also denied Mr Caudle's suggestion that she had made up the story to avoid getting into trouble for returning home late.

Her friend, aged 15, told the court they had gone to the school playground to smoke the cigarettes and drink the cider that Palmer had bought.

She said Palmer had asked her to meet someone called James in a car park and collect some money for him, so she left the school playground and waited in the car park.

A short time later she saw her friend walking towards her with messy hair and looking scared, the girl said.

Earlier yesterday, the jury had heard evidence from the 28-year-old woman, from Cinderford, who said Palmer had raped her after meeting her at the Registry night club in Gloucester. {-_-}
