163 entries for the Avon Vale! The weather conditions are causing us some concern but today in the afternoon, the course would have been raceable. I will keep everyone updated as and when I have news.
The Avon Vale at Larkhill – Easter Saturday 30 March 2013
Dual Cheltenham Festival winner My Way De Solzen is fancied to make it seven wins from nine outings between the flags in Easter Saturday’s Mens Open at the Avon Vale fixture, which has attracted 163 entries for the seven race card. The former Arkle Chase and World Hurdle winner made a successful seasonal reappearance when making all at Garthorpe a month ago. The 23 entries include course winner Certain Flight, dual Wincanton Hunter Chase winner Jayne’s Crusader, the Manns’ prolific Midnight King, who was giving the top-class Punchestowns a race when falling at Brocklesby Park, the Hills’ consistent Ravethebrave and last season’s Leading Young Horse Rumbavu. Sybarite, who cut down Roulez Cool on the run-in here in January, will be fancied to maintain in-form trainer Phil Rowley’s purple patch, but My Way De Solzen may just be able to dictate matters from the front.
Master Medic, Description and Billyvoddan were first, second and third here in January and can reoppose in the 29-entry Ladies contest. Black Forest Lodge winner Squadron, course specialist Quedillac, Cothelstone first and second Miss Midnight and Havenstone are four others to consider. The selection is Sagalyrique, who never really challenged at Cottenham in December but came right back to his best to defeat strong stayer Horsham Lad and “The Queen of Horseheath” Mid Div And Creep at Horseheath in February. Quedillac may provide the strongest challenge.
The Connolly’s Red Mills Intermediate has attracted 28 entries, including the season’s current Leading Novice Mare, Champagne Rosie, and Little Cornham, the only horse apart from Cheltenham Foxhunter runner-up Divine Intavention to give the progressive Mendip Express a race this season. Charlton Horethorne and Ston Easton winner Thinkaboutit is another for the short list. The selection is David Renney’s front running All Great N Theory, who has won his last three races by a wide margin. Little Cornham may get the better of Champagne Rosie for the minor placings.
Gone To Lunch can confirm New Forest form with Barneys Mate in the Novice Riders race. Parstara is a three-time Larkhill winner and may give the principals the most to do.
Parstara is among the five entries for the Hunt race, but stable companion Coombe Hill ran a fine race in the Cheltenham Foxhunter and gets the vote. Seven-time Irish winner Jayo, a close third at Ston Easton on Sunday, and Warwick Hunter Chase winner Starburst Diamond can complete the frame.
The Maiden has attracted 39 entries and could be difficult to solve. Urban Hymn is proving expensive for his odds-on supporters but the gelding seems well regarded at home and may be able to retrieve losses.
Ashton Magic, Cover Version and Piroulet are three suggestions for the 22-entry Restricted. .
Two pony races, qualifiers for the Wessex Series Finals in May, take place prior to the point-to-point races at 12.30pm.
The course is found just NW of Amesbury on Salisbury Plain, reached off the A303, A345 or A360. First race: 1.30pm. Admission: £10 per person, under 16s free.
