Want to know more about one of the pieces to be played on Sunday's concert?
PROGRAM NOTES: Beni Mora - GUSTAV HOLST was born into a family of musicians in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in England. His father was a church organist and choirmaster, his mother was a singer and pianist, and his grandfather had been a harp teacher and a composer of salon-type music for the harp. Young Gustav began the study of the piano and the violin when he was seven, and he was composing by the time he was 12. As a student at the Cheltenham Grammar School for boys he wrote piano pieces, organ voluntaries, songs, anthems and a symphony. Holst continued his education at the Royal College of Music in London, where he met fellow student Ralph Vaughan Williams. They became lifelong friends, developing a shared interest in the English vocal and choral tradition as it is expressed in folk song, madrigal and church music. For some years afterward Holst hoped to build part of his career as a pianist, but he was severely handicapped by neuritis that affected his right hand. He eventually gave up the piano for the trombone, and became proficient enough to perform with the Scottish Orchestra, forerunner of today’s Royal Scottish National Orchestra, as well as with a regional opera company and a popular orchestra. Holst took his first teaching job in 1904 at a girls’ school in South London. During the next two years he became director of music at St. Paul’s Girls’ School and at Morley College. He would hold both posts throughout his life.
Holst started to compose the Beni Mora suite at about the time he was working on the Suite in E-flat for Military Band and the Second Suite for Military Band, staples of the concert repertoire, and about five years before The Planets. The composer had worked for years to complete Sita, an opera which had occupied his spare time for more than six years. Depressed over his failure to win a cash prize and the guarantee of a performance in the Ricordi Competition (he had placed third), he doubted his credibility as a composer. Vaughan Williams came forward with some money and seconded his doctor’s opinion that he should take a vacation in a warm place. An experienced “rambler” who had hiked extensively in Italy, France and England, Holst took off on Good Friday of 1908 on a biking trip across the Algerian Sahara. In a letter to his wife he called Algeria “a mix of East and West.” Inspired by its sights and sounds, he wrote the first movement of Beni Mora in 1909, first giving it the title Oriental Suite. Concluding that the piece was too short to be considered a significant dance, he added two movements the following year and named the suite Beni Mora, a name taken from the Robert Hitchens novel “The Garden of Allah.” The work is considered Holst’s first mature piece for orchestra.
