Right, so the Abington Giant employs people who have never even heard of Kosher food. I'd like to be able to get some chicken and ground beef without having to schlep into NE Philly. Anyone....? Bueller...?

A Close Second!
This morning I should be happy with my lot after a decent Aintree betting wise and my selection in the National giving me a good run for my money, but I’m actually quite annoyed with myself.
The Son Of Flicka gamble last year came about because the previous year I was watching the horse I backed for the Martin Pipe – Sir Des Champs – win but only just got his head in front of another horse (off level weights) before the line and at the time I wondered who that second horse was. A year later, Son Of Flicka turns up in the Coral Cup carrying 8lbs less on his back and subsequently romps in at 66/1 having done nothing all year! My only regret is that in the midst of having my best Cheltenham ever, I was put off by the price and only had a tenner each way on him. Lesson number one!
Fast forward to the Galway Hurdle last year and I had been shouting about the chances of Rebel Fitz for quite a while having been gutted that he had to miss the festival the year before. His win was timely for me at that point as a week in Galway can slowly strangle your financial windpipe to the point of suffocation……but as we all remember, it may not have happened if the horse that chased him to the line – Cause Of Causes - had another stride to take! Although in receipt of 19lbs, it was a very eye catching run. That horse went on to be placed in the Racing Post Hurdle at 12/1 and was then quoted at 25/1 in the Ladbroke Hurdle in the lead up to Christmas. As cruel fate would have it happen, I was trying to get finished up in work for Christmas that day and I literally didn’t have time to take a lunch break, not to mind looking at horses or even placing a bet on my phone! While Gordon Elliot no doubt tucked into a very enjoyable festive feast, I was left to go hungry with only the bitter taste of disgust in my mouth!! I’m not after-timing when I say that I would have written up on that horse.
Between these two events, around this time last year as it happens, I did a write up on a horse for the Scottish National called Merigo and at the time it was a very confident selection based on him remaining at a winning mark and his love for Ayr (his record at that point there was 3,1,1,2,1,2,1). He duly delivered and I remarked that I would be heading to Punchestown dressed in a suit with a monkey in tow! The last thing I would ever be is arrogant or over confident about backing horses but I do remember commenting at the time that perhaps people were guilty of over thinking things at times (I know I certainly do!) because there weren’t too many on Merigo and I had posted him at 10/1 or so. The thing is that Merigo could so easily have been beaten that day as he only just got his head in front of another horse on the line that day and the two of them left the field for dead. That horse was of course Auroras Encore! If Auroras Encore had managed to win the race that day, he wouldn’t have gone to post yesterday at 66/1, that is for sure! On reflection, the reason for why I overlooked this horse is just another lesson on this long and everlasting road we call experience and I hope that by writing this, it may help others to avoid similar mistakes and point out similar opportunities to the forum.
In all three cases, I did well and made some decent money (and hopefully for a lot of other people too!) but the lesson here is that the real money was to be made in the horses that finished a close second!
