Just watched Supernova (2000). Yet another movie where the film is ruined by the computer playing chess with a crew member with the board the wrong way round. This happens so often that it is clear most directors don"t pay the game. Even the Shawshank Redemption board in the convict"s yard is the wrong way round.......

Arguing with "progressives" is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter how good you are the pigeon is going to knock over the pieces, crap on the board, and strut around like they are victorious. - Anonymous

Thanks to my dear friend Eva Satell for submitting this letter to the editor. Eva is a brilliant physician and the mother of my young chess buddy Aydin Turgut, who just became the U.S. Chess Champion for K-3. The Decatur Chess Club is very proud of our little lion. And I'm very grateful for Eva's friendship and support.

I have never been excited about local elections in the past as I am now because I know that my vote, and yours!, can make a difference and effect change. On April 9th I am going to vote for Josh Rohrscheib for Richland Community
College Board of Trustees. Let me explain why.

Josh is a young attorney with remarkable accomplishments: he is a small business owner, a community activist and an individual who is deeply involved and caring about the greater Decatur community. He is committed to education having been both a student at Richland and a professor there; he comes with a wealth of experience and fresh ideas having served as Student Body President at University of Illinois where he developed an innovative scholarship program. As an attorney he is uniquely positioned to interpret the law and make it work for the benefit of the Richland community. I am most impressed by his commitment to accountability and transparency at the level of the Board and if elec! ted, he will work towards changing arcane procedures in order to allow for open public comment at Board meetings which currently does not exist.
Josh has no hidden agenda, he speaks his mind, he is progressive, energetic and possesses infectious enthusiasm. I also believe that as a social media developer and co-creator of the innovative website ReDecatur, he keeps his hand on the pulse of today's young people. In a word, Josh is connected, caring, responsive and he gets things done. So lets not let this candle go out. Keep it burning: go out and vote for Josh Rohrscheib on April 9th.

Capablanca chess. Archbishop (bishop+knight compound) is placed between knight and bishop on the queen's side, chancellor (rook+knight compound) on the king's side
In an interview in 1925 Capablanca denied reports that he thought chess had already currently reached its limit because it was easy for top players to obtain a draw. However he was concerned that the accelerating development of chess technique and opening knowledge might cause such stagnation in 50 years' time. Hence he suggested the adoption of a 10x8 board with 2 extra pieces per side:
a chancellor that moves as both a rook and a knight;
an archbishop that moves as both a bishop and a knight. This piece would be able to deliver checkmate on its own, which none of the conventional pieces can do.
He thought this would prevent technical knowledge from becoming such a dominant factor, at least for a few centuries
Capablanca and Edward Lasker experimented with 10x10 and 10x8 boards, using the same expanded set of pieces. They preferred the 8-rank version as it encouraged combat to start earlier, and their games typically lasted 20 to 25 moves. Contrary to the claims of some critics, Capablanca proposed this variant while he was world champion, not as sour grapes after losing his title.
Similar 10x8 variants had previously been described in 1617 by Pietro Carrera and in 1874 by Henry Bird, differing only in how the new pieces were placed in each side's back row. Subsequent variants inspired by Capablanca's experimentation have been proposed, including Grand chess (which uses a 10x10 board and has pawns on the third rank), Gothic Chess (which used to be patented), and Embassy Chess (the Grand chess setup on a 10x8 board).
