You know that India's Viswanathan Anand has won the World Chess Championship 5 times. He will be defending his World championship in November 2013. A tournament called the Candidates tournament is now underway in London to determine a challenger to Anand's crown. A Norwegian prodigy called Magnus Carlsen is the world's top ranked chess player according to ELO ratings (Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in two-player games such as chess. It is named after its creator Arpad Elo). Carlsen is also competing in the London Candidates tournament: he has been leading in points and looked all set to win the tournament and become the challenger to Anand. But something happened late last night: in the 12th round of the 14 round tournament, he had lost to veteran Vassily Ivanchuk and at the same time Vladimir Kramnik, a 3 time former world champion had won his 12th round game to surge into lead. With only 2 more rounds to go, would Carlsen be able to regain his lead? This is significant, because, Carlsen is in such awesome form in the recent months that he looked certain, not only to become the challenger, but, actually beat Anand.

Magnus Carlsen emerges as Challenger to Vishy Anand:

The 2013 Candidates Tournament which took place from 15 March to 1 April in London has reached its culmination with Magnus Carlsen of Norway emerging as the winner. With this win Carlsen has earned the right to challenge the World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand (winner of the World Chess Championship 2012).

The 14th and last round of the Candidates Tournament turned out to be anticlimactic with both the contenders for the top position: Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik losing their respective games, but, despite their last round defeats, they finished at the top with 8 ½ points each. Carlsen was declared the winner because of his better tie-break score.

The World Chess Championship 2013 will be held under the auspices of FIDE, the World Chess Federation, from 6 to 26 November 2013. Chennai, the hometown of World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand, is being considered as the venue for the World Chess Championship 2013.

"In 1913, exactly a century ago, the United States was a flourishing, economically advanced country. Its real output per capita was the world’s highest. It produced a great abundance of agricultural products and was a leading exporter of cotton, wheat, and many other farm products. Yet it also had the world’s largest industrial sector, producing as much manufactured output as France, Germany, and the United Kingdom combined. It brought forth new technological marvels almost daily, and its cities featured well paved and lighted streets, automobiles, modern sewerage and water-supply systems, central electrical-supply systems, skyscrapers, street cars, subways, and frequent intercity train service. During the preceding fifty years, its real income per capita had grown by about 2 percent per year, on average, and its total real output by about 4 percent per year, on average. All races, classes, and regions participated in this progress. In 1913, the rate of unemployment was 4.3 percent, and the price level was roughly the same as its average during the nineteenth century.

Yet the United States in 1913 had no federal income tax, no central bank, no social security taxes, no general sales taxes, no Securities and Exchange Commission, no Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, no Department of Health and Human Services, no National Labor Relations Board, no federal this, that, and the other as far as the eye can see."

~ Robert Higgs, with a look at life in the United States before the institution of the Federal Reserve and the income tax. Needless to say, it's pretty much been downhill ever since.
