April 14th, at 3pm. We will be joined by a Native Countrymen of Julie's from North of England, up near Newcastle. It saddens him that he has gradually moved his way southwards, pitching his tent up in York, Leeds, in Sheffield for over 5 years, then in Cambridgeshire for nearly 9 years and then to his current humble abode in Northampton, a town about 50 miles north of London.
In his travels he also had occasion to visit New Market, which is where Julie is from in England. Chris Ross played chess there at least 3 weekends a year, in the Turner Hall near the town centre. As a young girl, she DJeyed in that hall on Thursday and Saturday nights for 2 years. He was a German teacher in an equivalent to a high school here, he enjoyed it for the first 5 years. Bureaucracy and the paperwork, managers and the non-teaching side of things, as well as the English educational system collapsing, forced him out of the profession, sadly enough. he had to transfer his skills then into his second non-chess passion, and that is fighting and obtaining equal rights for disadvantaged folk. Well, better put maybe is smoothing the pathways for those folk, who don't have his arrogant streak of independence and guileless disregard for the weak he trampled and crashed his way through life to accomplish everything he wanted to.
So, he now works at a university, teaching the academic staff how to differentiate to empower the disadvantaged folk in their classes to learn best. Also, fighting those people's rights with all concerned, including England's inadequate government and getting all of the government funding they thoroughly deserve. IN short, he enables folk to obtain their degrees and gives them hope, confidence and the encouragement to actually get an education at a higher educational establishment. Chris's passion for chess has taken him world-wide, from parachuting, to hot-air-ballooning, to the China
Wall, to gold-panning in South New Zealand, to camel trekking in the Gobi
desert through Mongolia, to Auschwitz in Poland with 40 of the most
dysfunctional teenagers our society can offer, to the depths of Eastern
Europe in former Communist-ran states, to haggling with the street merchants
of inner Chennai, to the spectacular Hagia Sophia in central Istanbul, to
being witnesses of the crimes and atrocities of the Partite in South Africa,
and the list goes on and on.
Chris travels to places that are unthinkable for a sighted person let alone a blind man. He has jumped out of an airplane at 12,000 feet. and is coming to share all these experiences with us in his own style of humor, on April 14th at 3pm. I do hope you will join Blind Café in Welcoming Chris to the site and I know you will enjoy his interview given by Julie Parker, President of Blind Café and Alan Dicey, who serves on the Blind Café's Publicity Committee. Chris Ross is a titled player, that being a "Chess Master".
