WH40K Dawn of War 2: Retribution Campaign: Mission 1
Bell
At dawn on 9 April 1942, against the orders of Generals Douglas MacArthur and Jonathan Wainwright, the commander of the Luzon Force, Bataan, Major General Edward P. King, Jr. surrendered more than 76,000 starving and disease-ridden soldiers (67,000 Filipinos, 1,000 Chinese Filipinos, and 11,796 Americans) to Japanese troops .
The majority of these prisoners of war had their belongings confiscated before being forced to endure the infamous 140 kilometre (90 mile) Bataan Death March to Camp O'Donnell in Capas, Tarlac. En route, thousands died from dehydration, heat prostration, untreated wounds, and wanton execution while walking in deep dust over vehicle-broken Macadam roads, and crammed into rail cars for transport to captivity.[10]
The few who were lucky enough to travel by truck to San Fernando, Pampanga would still have to endure more than 25 additional miles of marching. Prisoners were beaten randomly and often denied promised food and water. Those who fell behind were usually executed or left to die, the sides of the roads becoming littered with dead bodies and those moaning for help.
Only some 54,000 of the 76,000 prisoners reached their destination; the exact death toll is difficult to assess because thousands of captives were able to escape from their guards. Approximately 5,000-10,000 Filipino and 600-650 American prisoners-of-war died before they could reach Camp O'Donnell.

from the bulletin this week - father bob writes -
LAST WORD ON EASTER: Quite remarkable the number of local parishioners and visitors who attended our Triduum Liturgies and Masses. All churches experienced above average attendances particularly Good Friday activities at Blackheath and Megalong Valley, Sunday Mass at Blackheath where overcrowding was experienced and house-full attendances at both Mount Victoria and Megalong Valley Masses. Overall, everyone who contributed to the planning and conduct of our Holy Week and Easter
activities have every reason to be very happy indeed with the results we have enjoyed. Congratulations to our Parish Council Chairperson, Frances Huckstepp and her committee members; our Musical Director, Kate Forbes, and her team; plus our floral
group for their magnificent flower displays. A special thanks to Fr Paul Hanna who helped to make the whole experience a breeze, including the beautiful reflections held at Mount Blackheath at Good Friday sunset and Govett’s Leap for Easter Sunday sunrise.
Thanks also to Kate Forbes for producing the Bulletins for the Easter Services. To everyone else who presented the church at its very best, a huge thank you on behalf of all parishioners and visitors.
Thank you to Sue Gracey and Judy Harris and helpers for the wonderful job of raising $814.05 (compared to last year’s $514.00) from the cake and craft stand on Easter Sunday. Thank you also to all who made and donated items and to our wonderful cooks who made all the delicious goodies that were gladly bought and devoured. What would we do without you?
FAMILY SOCIAL EVENINGS: The ninth film is to be screened on Saturday, 13th April, commencing at 7.30pm in the church hall. It takes about 50 minutes, and a gold coin will gain you a post-film supper! Well worth the time and social contact!
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY: As mentioned last week, today is Divine Mercy Sunday, and you are invited to attend the special celebrations commencing at 2.45pm this afternoon at St Bonaventure’s Church, Leura. Spread the word to your friends.
MY ANNUAL LEAVE: I have arranged to take two weeks’ annual leave commencing tomorrow, 8th April, and returning on Tuesday, 23rd April. During this period, there will be no daily masses at Sacred Heart Blackheath NOR vigil masses at either Mount
Victoria or Megalong Valley. However, Fr Paul Hanna has graciously agreed to celebrate both Blackheath 9.30am Sunday Masses in my absence.
ANZAC DAY – NOTE YOUR DIARY! Because of my commitment from 9am at Mount Victoria War Memorial on Anzac Day (25th April), I have had to bring forward our scheduled Mass for that day to 7.30am at Blackheath. This Mass will be dedicated to the
memory of all who have fought in all wars involving Australians. Commencing at 10.45am at the rear of the Blackheath War Memorial in the Memorial Gardens, wreaths will be laid to commemorate our fallen service men and women including one from Sacred Heart Parish. Also associated with these Anzac Day activities will be a Dawn Service commencing at 6.30am at Blackheath War Memorial and a march commencing at
10.25am from the Sub-Branch hall on the south side of the railway.
AUDIO VISUAL EQUIPMENT PROGRESS REPORT: A final recommendation for the purchase and installation of audio visual equipment best suited to our needs has been made by the special sub-committee convened for that particular purpose. Last Thursday, the Finance Committee met to consider and ecommend to the Parish Council the final acceptance of the successful tenderers. A verbal report containing details of this project might be expected at today’s Mass.
SACRAMENT OF INITIATION: Last Wednesday afternoon at St Joseph’s Megalong
Valley, Hanna Carlon and Jared Harris received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the
first time on their way to making their First Holy Communion and Confirmation later
this year.
