So I took my Tyson my new horse to the vet for the third time because he has been gradually losing weight on a diet of free choice Orchard/Timothy hay, spits out rolled up chunks of hay, leaves thicker diameter hay to eat absolutely last, has a cough & nasal discharge...I can tell he needs his teeth done but I was surprised to hear the vet wasn't convinced he had an infection but that he has heaves/asthma/COPD or whatever it's called now. She advised an immune boosting injection now & again in two weeks. She also didn't rule out infection so she prescribed him antibiotics & wants to hold off doing his teeth to allow infection to clear if he has one. She suggested I move him from his dry (now mucky from rain) lot to grass pasture if at all possible to keep dust to a minimum & allow him easier grazing than hay can provide, which I can do but I'm concerned about his feet because I prefer keeping my horses barefoot.

Do any of you horse people out there have any experience with this kind of situation? The asthma in particular is a new one for me...

URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT: This year there was an assessment on the scheduling efficiency of the middle and high schools in the county, in order to improve SOL scores. There is a proposal to cut 1 period out of the MS schedule, making it a 6 period day with slightly longer classes. In order to fit all academic classes, plus music and PE into the schedule, they want PE AND MUSIC classes alternating on an A/B basis. This would mean the instructional time for music in 7th & 8th grade would be reduced by more than 43% (compared to the current schedule.)

The change would impact over 60% of students at Auburn and approximately 50% of MS students county wide. This is not just a MS issue – it’s a domino affect that will GREATLY impact Liberty High School and other Fauquier County high schools in the future! Freshmen will be less experienced, less prepared, and not as proficient at their instruments as past freshman classes. We do not want to lose our talented, hard working teachers or the wonderful band programs they have built! We have to do everything we can to save music in the schools.

The powers that be are trying to push it through for next year, but we would like to see this decision tabled. They have been working on this proposal for over 2 years, but only disclosed this information to the staff very recently. There has to be a better way - but we need some time to do our homework (especially since they had 2 years to work on their proposal?)

On Monday, April 8th the Fauquier Co. Sch Bd meeting will be held at Warrenton Middle School Auditorium for all Fauquier County MS and HS at 7:00 p.m. The purpose of this meeting is to share information and discuss the proposed changes to the MS schedule. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend this very important meeting. We need TONS of parent support to fight these proposed changes
