LAOIS YFG COMMENDS COUNCIL ON BALANCED BUDGET

Laois Young Fine Gael has commended Laois County Council and management for managing to achieve a balanced budget and surplus despite having more than half a million euro less in their budget last year.

“It is a considerable achievement that the local authority has succeeded in ensuring that there was no overrun in the Council budget. There has been some misleading and negative criticism from a number of Fianna Fáil Councillors to what is in fact a very positive effort made by the Council and Laois YFG feel that this needs to be addressed.”

“Taking a populist stance and making misleading remarks will not be of any benefit to the people of Laois. Fianna Fáil is talking from both sides of its mouth when they oppose the introduction of the local property tax even though it was their Party who signed up to the tax in the National Recovery Plan,” Chairperson of YFG Conor Bergin said.

“It has to be acknowledged that the introduction of the local property tax this year will put Laois County Council in a position to continue being able to provide crucial services in a very difficult climate but also to balance spending in line with EU/IMF obligations and cut down on waste and overspending. Laois County Council should be applauded, not criticised for being able to achieve such a figure at a time when they are expected to do more and more with less resources,” Mr. Bergin said.

“Of course while there is a considerable level of difficulty among the public with the council having to tighten up on spending, it's also worth remembering that debt is the single biggest issue in Ireland today and anywhere it can be managed, particularly in public services, is a positive step forward. Large levels of debt will always prove to be unsustainable and, judging by some of the comments made last week, this is a lesson that Fianna Fáil has clearly failed to learn.”

“The hypocritical and duplicitous nature of some remarks made by FF Councillors is astounding. Laois YFG is very much supportive of the Council’s efforts to manage its budget in a sensible and practical manner.”
