We give information to educate. We confront untruths with truths. We work in partnership and fully support legitimate, honest, and transparent groups, rescues, and individuals. We think that Canada's slaughter industry starts from the time a horse is bred, and responsibility lies in all those who have had shared a part of that horses life, from conception until death. Also, within the legislative bodines that make rules, and enforce rules and regulations as well. This means the Canadian government, the Ontario government, the OSPCA, and any other such enforcers.
It is not just closing down slaughter plants, it is holding people accountable for the choices they have made that will result in the direct consequences for that horse.
Saying that, before auction, we believe that first a horse should be tried to be rehomed responsibly- information, background checks, signed agreements, and pictures and licenses of new owners copied so a horse can be traced. Ads on kijiji, horse websites and newsletters, word of mouth, etc. And sometimes, in the end, the horse will be euthanized due to the circumstances.
Next is the step of finding homes at the auction if that route is taken. Providing information, as much as possible, going witht he horse to the auction so you can see who is getting the horse or if you will allow them to take your horse. Doing your research. Once the horse is sold at the auction, you no longer have a say. People need to realize that. The only exception is if the horse previously had a contract, and another person broke that contract and took the horse to the auction. Then you may have grounds. Some horses will go to homes, others rescues, others dealers, others killbuyers. It really is a chance, like playing the slots, you just never know. There is only so much one organization can do, the more support the better.
And lastly the feedlots. But to do this wisely and carefully, honestly and being accountable. This may well be the last chance the horse has. Some horses may have been purchased by killbuyers for slaughter, others for the intention of resale. We do understand the feedlot model.
RESPONSE TO NYNE-
JLC has never once said that we can handle all the horses go through OLEX. We did support NYNE fully until September 2012, when things did not add up. We have never said the NYNE was not needed for these horses- what we said is honesty and a placing horses in proper homes is. Most people questioning and confronting want to support a group with integrity. Questions were not answered. lots of questions by different individuals and groups and organizations. What we have asked for is accountability, transparency, and understanding regarding information that was contradicting itself. Suggestions have been made, several people have offered to meet and discuss things, see how people can work together. This request was not accepted. We were asked by NYNE not to post certain information. When information was recently posted and lied about, people and other groups did confront NYNE.
Has NYNE brokered almost 500 horses. Yes. Have all these horses been bought by a killbuyer for slaughter- no, the pricing at OLEX tells quote a different story. Yes, there were horse that NYNE placed that would have gone to slaughter, but there were also quite a few who were not.
NYNE, you are making this decision not to pull horses from the killbuyer, that they will direct ship. That is your choice. Pull away and watch the horses direct ship to prove a point. To avoid be held responsible for your actions that have lead to people's doubt about NYNE. Why not take some some suggestions, make some changes, and sit down and talk to people who have asked questions? Sit back and watch "attacks", or take this as it is. A fact based response to an emotion filled NYNE status that blames everyone else for your own decisions and consequences for your own actions.

Memo to my man Latrell Sprewell AKA Bigger Thomas: I backed you when you snapped and choke your coach. Intellectually, it was a softball down the middle of the plate, given that America loves & embraces violence; her only objection historically has been, Bigger Thomas has no right to engage in violent acts.
I'm sure you know, America's fear of Bigger Thomas lashing out goes back to her fear of slave rebellions. So her horror at Sprewell Unleashed, but her excuse making of "coach" Bobby Knight should not have come as a racial surprise.
But know this Spree, given the Rutgers smoking gun "coaching" tape, and NASCAR drivers trying their best to maim each other, America is looking rather foolish, in her treatment of you.
Me? I ride or die with Bigger Thomas. I still got your back. Of course, when you turned down a 3 yr, 21 million dollar contract stating, "I got kids to feed," well, I have to admit, I jumped off the Sprewell train. #Don't Judge:)
