So who does my son see while on his Washington trip but his soccer buddies Bryden and Pony. Seems Foothill and Diablo View are at same place.
Having a good time, but missed being home for Eastet.

Lincoln: Vampire Slayer, was an awesome movie... and watching it has brought to my attention somethings that I am going to post about tomorrow when I have the time to sit and write it out. In the mean time... opinions on how this document relates to our Equality issue----

The Gettysburg Address

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

I know it is asking a lot…

could we have a "government of the people, by the the people, and for the people," for a few minutes sometime this year?

It could coincide with: Nov 1863's anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. Nov 1963's loss of a young President. August 1963's March on Washington. Jan 1863's Emancipation Proclamation. Any would do.

Then we could go back to the standard operating procedures...

For the all negative that I read about this country, I witnessed today what I feel is the best of our citizens and country. This afternoon the remains of SPC Zach Shannon, United State Army, returned to our hometown of Dunedin, FL. SPC Shannon and crew were killed in Kandahar, Afghanistan when their helicopter crashed. As I stood on Main Street watching the procession of Police and Fireman, along with motor cycles donning American Flags, I looked up and down the street in a mix of sorrow and pride. The sorrow in witnessing another of America’s youth were coming home in a flag draped casket. But as I stood on the street paying my respects, I l witnessed displays that showed what I feel is truly great about this country. Traffic came to a halt with the only movement coming from thousands of flags flapping in the breeze. I saw mechanics leave their garage standing at attention, city works putting down their shovels and removing their helmets, men and women of all ages paying respects to the procession of this young soldier’s remains returning home. And when it passed, everyone returned to their day to day activities. I did not personally know SPC Shannon, but respect the living hell out of him from showing me what I love about this country!

It has been said that one picture is worth ten thousand words, but the person who said that had obviously never read the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence or the 23rd Psalm. They'd never read Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address," or the impassioned pleas of Martin Luther King, Winston Churchill or Patrick Henry. Those words changed the course of history and gave individuals and nations a hope for a better future.
Patrick Henry said "give me liberty and give me death", and a nation was united. Winston Churchill said "There will always be an England" and a country was lifted up by its boot straps.

Finally got to see the 30:30 ESPN documentary on Jimmy V and the NC State Upset in 1983. Best sports upset of all time. Love the way the players, coaches and team assistance documented on each game all the way up to the championship. I still say that Jimmy V's speech at the ESPYs in 1983 about life, cancer and survival stands on its own as one of the best and inspirational ever. Especially the circumstances that he was dying. Yes, we have the Gettysburg Address, Churchill, JFK and MLK. But Jimmy V is up there.

So in American Lit I am writing about Lincoln! Here is what I wrote...
Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address during the civil war on the battlefield upon which it was fought in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” His speech was reminding people that all people are to be equal as it was written in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution 87 years before. Our country was founded on freedom and equality and once again if we divide we will fall. Funny thing, today while I was on facebook I saw that the Human Rights Campaign is asking same-sex marriage supporters to change their profile pictures to the image of a pink equal sign on a red background. In an article written in the American Conservative, former governor Jon Huntsman of Utah said "The party of Lincoln should stand with our best tradition of equality and support full civil marriage for all Americans." 150 years later and we are still pleading for equality!

Abraham Lincoln is often held up to children as a model of achievement and an embodiment of “The American Dream.” Regarded by many as the greatest President of the United States of America, Lincoln’s Second Inaugural address is one of the noblest political speeches ever given, and his Gettysburg Address is still studied and memorized by many students. Amazingly, Lincoln had only four months of formal education, and that in a one-room country schoolhouse where students ranged from age five to twenty-five. His teacher probably had no more than an eighth-grade education, if that.
One day a father was reciting all of these achievements to his son. “Where else but in America could this happen?” he mused. And then, hoping to instill in his son a little more ambition to study, he asked, “Do you know what abe Lincoln was doing when he was your age?”
The boy answered, “No, but I do know what he was doing when he was your age.”
We nearly always err when we suggest to others that they be like anybody other than their own best selves. And, to our surprise, they usually let us know we have erred!
