FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He led the U.S through its greatest constitutional, military and moral crises -- the American Civil War-- preserving the Union, abolishing slavery, strengthening the national government and modernizing the economy. Lincoln brought leaders of the major factions of his party into his cabinet and pressured them to cooperate. Politically, Lincoln fought back with patronage, by putting his opponents against each other and by appealing to the American people with his power of oratory. His Gettysburg Address of 1863 became the most quoted speech in American history.
Maybe you dont know; you are the Lincoln of your generation. Therefore to attain this dream, let us all support this campaign for a change Nigeria.

Gettysburg College Faculty,

You'll be bombarded with requests this week to hold class outside. Remember: real academia happens indoors. Do not debase yourselves or our institution by playing into the unamerican nonsense that argues otherwise.

So you can study American History and get a degree in it at Bowdoin College in Maine, and not have to take a class dealing with our history of The Continental Congress, the Constitution and the American Revolution? Gee I hope they don’t read about the American Civil War because that would cause them to learn that one of their former professors joined the Union Army, received the Medal of Honor for actions taken at Little Round Top at Gettysburg and was honored (as he said) to be chosen to command the Northern Soldiers that received the official surrender and stacking of Arms from Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House.
According to what I have read Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was a professor at Bowdoin College in Maine when the war broke out. Professor Chamberlain was loved by his students and they flocked to take his class rather than the boring, staid old style preferred by some of the “Old Guard” who taught there. Because of this the school made it hard on Chamberlain and gave him all the tough assignments of lowest regard.
However when he joined the Union Army these professors who wanted him gone changed their tune and wrote letters to the Army trying to get him removed so that he would stay on at the College. It seems that the professors preferred the “devil they knew than one they didn’t” or a chance that the next teacher of Chamberlains classes might not succumb as easily to their bullying. However Chamberlain was accepted, did command the 20th Main at Little Round Top where, out of ammunition but with orders to hold until the last, he led a bayonet charge that drove the Southern Army from their position and “preserved the flank”.
Chamberlain would be at the surrender at Appomattox (see his book, “A Passing of the Armies”) and later become Governor of his beloved state of Main.
It would be too bad if these students don’t get to hear this true story of perseverance and courage of conviction. It might help them as they go out into the real world and find that at times it takes more than just a degree to “capture the brass ring”.
I’ll see y’all when the smoke clears.

Well, I didn't make it, but I tried. Glycogen stores dropped and I hit the wall at 26 miles, in the Botzum Trailhead, also started into a touch of dehydration, so wisdom wone out and we shut it down. Thanks so much to all of you who came out to run or help me out. Georgann and Aaron, Charley Bowman, John Ozzie Oswald, Alex Bevan, Jeffrey Brandl, Matt and Dar Theodus. And Scarlet the wonder dog... Also thanks to all of you who couldn't be there but who left notes or likes on fb... Ya gotta believe. Maybe next time. Next stop, Gettysburg Marathon.

Found an interesting book in my garage today.

Why is it useless to send a letter to Washington today?
Because he died in 1799

Why did Eisenhower move to a farm in PA?
Because, like Lincoln, he wanted a Gettysburg address.

Why didn't they play cards on the Ark?
Because Noah was sitting on the deck.

REVIEW FOR 150TH ANNIVERSARY THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG - SPECIAL PHOTOGRAPHY EDITION

There’s a certain magnetism that seems to pull people to Gettysburg. I’m not sure just what it is, but Civil War scholars, buffs, reenactors and even those who aren’t attracted to history tell me that they are almost drawn to this small town in Southern Pennsylvania. While I don’t think that unseen force is what brought the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia together here one hundred-fifty years ago, I do believe that somehow what “…they did here…” as Abraham Lincoln put it, may just be part of the pull.
For those of us who live many hours away, we often travel here in our minds. We were able to do that much better when “Reflections of Gettysburg” came along. Juliana and Jason seem to have a special ability for capturing on camera the spirit of the soldiers and their sacrifice in July of 1863. And that, I believe, is what draws all of us here. Their images of sunrise and sunset silhouettes, mountains, monuments and artillery pieces seem to transport us to Gettysburg almost as much as if we’re walking the fields. This 150th Anniversary Edition doesn’t attempt to tell the story of the Battle. Rather it simply emphasizes to all of us that Gettysburg is indeed a place for all seasons as we, like Lincoln, remember those who here “…gave their last full measure of devotion.”
