"It Takes a Man and a Woman" Flash Review
There's a long line at the cinema. Behind me are two young sisters (older one is probably around 17 while the younger's about 8). They're talking about the film they're excited to see. Their mom who's been impatiently checking the long queue approaches them.
Mommy: GI Joe na lang kaya tayo.
Little girl: Mommy, I don't want GI Joe. I want Sarah G.
And the girls resume their passionate discussion. Apparently they can't wait to see "It Takes a Man and a Woman." It should be noted that this family (their dad is with them too) belongs to the upper class, judging from the way they speak (all talk in fluent English.)
Star Cinema's latest offering successfully charms all classes, which proves that Filipino movies aren't all 'jologs' or 'baduy,' like some pretentious people purport. Although that really doesn't mean very much so I'm not sure why I bring it up in the first place.
Anyway, a few notes on the movie (may contain some spoilers):
1. Pretty funny, and there's a 'kilig' factor - thanks to John Lloyd and Sarah's organic chemistry on screen.
2. Acting-wise, it's Isabelle Daza's Belle that truly stands out. Simple yet moving and believable performance, especially the break-up scene.
3. They used NAIA Terminal 3 several times, and on all occasions, either John Lloyd or Sarah is flying to the States. As far as I know, Terminal 3 doesn't have international flights.
4. Star Cinema movies always have this funny group of friends who support either the male or female protagonist and "It Takes.." isn't exempted from this cliche. Zoila and friends are a good addition to the film's comedy aspect. They're hilarious, yes, but they're just a decoration.
5. While the airport scene at the end of the movie is funny, I can't make myself to like it. It's cheesy and we've seen that a hundred times before from other Star Cinema movies.
6. The bloopers (although some look fake) are a riot.
7. The wedding sequence is lovely but the long speeches of the bride and groom are almost a bore.
8. Most funny scene: when Laida jumps out of bed after realizing that Miggy and her have been cuddling all night. She gets all jittery - "Mauuna na akong maligo, pagkatapos ko, ako naman." What a hoot!
10. Ok, ang haba na at nagpi-feeling movie reviewer na ko. Panoorin niyo na lang. Yes, recommended. :-)

If you are a fan of the cartoon, of the toys, of character development, of plots, of good acting and of movies in general - DO NOT SEE GI JOE!!

Weekly movie review: We went and saw Olympus has Fallen. Very action packed movie. Even the women enjoyed it even though the men picked it. Hope in real life the Military has a little faster response time.

I've just posted my review of GI Joe: The Retaliation. How I suffer for my art. This was a mishmash of noise, fights, bombs, nukes, etc. etc. Apparently, I fell asleep for long sections of it. My gut-review is at Gilbertcross.com. I only paid five bucks, but it is available in different potencies. God it was awful and should makes millions.
I've had my friend Dave Berger photograph the cover of my remaining young adult novel (the first I wrote). There was a Dutch version, too.
I think the revision of the Adelphi Calendar is finished except for a final proofreading. I don't know what proofreading can be done--it is 10,000 pages long!!
Next up, another young adult novel destined for obscurity. Hey ho, the wind and the rain.
Ainsi soit-il.

MOVIE REVIEW: GI - Joe The best and kindest thing I can say about this movie is that if you are a twelve year old boy or are with a bunch of twelve year old boys . . . this movie will be a hit! It is just what one would expect with lots of shooting, blowing up things of all kinds and action. CG is good though and half way through you get to see the original GI - Joe . . . good old Bruce Willis! If you have boys then take them to see this one - - you will their hero! And yes . . . although FAR from twelve years old, I did enjoy this one!

GI JOE RET. is a mixture of minja assassin, ninja nurtles, kung-fu hustle and the expandables.... and some BOND stuff too... THE ROCK cudnt save the movie in which hafl the cast was ninja and other half had nigligible role... Channing Tatum dies before interval and most impressive performacne was of a villain (Storm Shadow)..
total waste of time and money...

GI Joe becomes the 2nd casualty of this summer after Die Hard 5, good action in parts but the story and the franchise seems to be going nowhere. Watch it mainly for that one Ninja fight sequence over the snow capped mountains.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation was bad. So little gadgetry, actions were poorly executed, camera work was dizzying, the story shallow and script was wanting. It was more of a chinese movie rolled into a Die Hard film rolled into The Expendibles. In the first GI Joe movie the GI Joe group is a world-wide based organization, thus, even the cast of characters were sourced from all over. Now it looks like a US based organization that travelled to a few overseas countries but got wiped out by one covert attack on a single desert base. How they got wiped out in one base considering their international connections is one fatal flaw in the way the story was concocted. My rating (out of five stars): 1/2.

GI Joe was easily one of the best action films I've seen in years. Total fun, great plot, original scenes and The Rock kicking butt. Plus, hands down, the coolest fight sequence I've seen that was on the side of a mountain. I almost stood up and demanded they rewind it.
