STATEMENT BY RUTGERS UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT ROBERT L. BARCHI REGARDING MIKE RICE

Rutgers University has a long and proud history as one of the nation’s most diverse and welcoming academic institutions. Coach Rice’s abusive language and actions are deeply offensive and egregiously violate the university’s core values.

When video excerpts of basketball practices were reviewed last fall by Athletic Director Tim Pernetti, he immediately notified me and sought the advice of internal and outside counsel. The university hired an independent investigator to look into this matter thoroughly. Based on the external investigator's findings and recommendations, Tim and I agreed that Coach Rice should be suspended, penalized $75,000 in fines and lost salary, ordered to undergo anger management counseling, and put on notice that his behavior would be closely monitored. Tim Pernetti also made it clear to Coach Rice that there would be zero tolerance for additional infractions. Tim kept me fully apprised and I supported his actions.

Yesterday, I personally reviewed the video evidence, which shows a chronic and pervasive pattern of disturbing behavior. I have now reached the conclusion that Coach Rice cannot continue to serve effectively in a position that demands the highest levels of leadership, responsibility and public accountability. He cannot continue to coach at Rutgers University. Therefore, Tim Pernetti and I have jointly decided to terminate Mike Rice’s employment at Rutgers.

This morning, my mind bleeds for my race. My mind bleeds for the Yorubas. I tell you if you a Yoruba man or woman and the only sentiment you have is PDP/ACN, you need to av a rethink. Other parts of Nigeria are leaving us behind.
Go to the East, South-South and d North, especially the North-West, South-West is lagging behind in terms of development.
Today, Kano State has THREE State Universities while our governors are busy scrapping existing higher institutions. Bayelsa State is offering Free Education, paying its pupils' WAEC and NECO fees. The kind of road network in Akwa-Ibom is not in any State in the South-West. The State even built its own AIRPORT and gave it to KLM to manage. Niger-Delta Militants are already becoming Marine Engineers, Petro-Chemical Engineers, Computer Scientists, etc.
I know some of us would say - blame PDP rule in d South-West, but I tell u, AD/ACN has been ruling Lagos since 1999, it has ruled Ekiti and Osun for SIX and Half years, Oyo and Ogun for FIVE Years and 10 months and Ondo for FOUR years. LP has ruled Ondo for over FOUR years.
Bw 1999 and now, PDP ruled Ogun and Oyo states for EIGHT Years, Ekiti and Osun for SEVEN and Half years and Ondo for less than SIX years.

And the biggest shame, we have been reduced to mere spectators in the affairs of Nigeria. From number ONE to TEN, we are not there. The Reps Speaker that was zoned to our land, we sold it to d North by ourselves. I did a collation of appointment of Chairmen and DG of 100 agencies and commissions, South-West had only EIGHT when zones like SS, SE and NW had more than 20!

I remember what my grand mother used to tell me; "ko si e nbe, o ni bawo ni won se pin, eni ti o si nile ni ewure e maa nbi obuko." (You were not there, you are asking how it was shared, it is the one who is not at home that his goat gives birth to a he-goat).

Yet, when questions are raised about what those governing us are doing, those of us who shuld be concerned will be talking about political parties as if there is any diff bw six and half dozen. When questions are asked about the mortgaging of the future of you and I thru huge LOANS and BONDS, what we say is; "it is our time, allow us to do what we like." But who will pay back all these loans by? Is it not you and I? How much loan did Awolowo take to do all that he did? How much loan did Jakande take to do what he did in Lagos in FOUR years? How much loan did Ajasin take to do all that he did in Ondo State in Four years?

Well, the future of you and I is being compromised now, if you like, keep quite or keep talking about PDP/ACN even when u are not known in any of the parties.
