A lot of game programmers and content creators I know got their start by modifying games they enjoyed playing. This was back when game modification was an encouraged act. Many hobbyists learned how games worked, what was fun to play, and discovered they liked making games.
Games today are increasingly discouraging modification (only notable exception off the top of my head are games which Valve are putting out and Minecraft/Terraria). How, then, is the game industry getting fresh developers? Game design programs at universities?
I feel that there's a demand, even if not entirely apparent, for games which welcome modification. Some of the greatest games made today were made by hobbyists of the 90s tinkering with game mods. We should be encouraging kids today to be curious about what makes games tick. Games should welcome their creativity and provide a means for alteration.
Minecraft was hugely successful because it made a game of the level design process people of the 90s went through. It is also easy to modify and has a massive repository of mods as a result.
I wonder if a pre-built game modding kit would do well A pre-bundled package of a simple-to-modify game that runs on even low-end machines (Quake 1 maybe? Doom?) with tools and pdf tutorials on how to use them to change the game in the ways they feel fit.
