Candidate Susie Byrd says, If elected, I will:

1. Reform EPISD to ensure that ALL children are provided a quality education. Immediate action needs to be taken to:
• Identify the campuses that were infected by the cheating scandal and the people who participated in it;
• Remove all individuals who undermined the integrity of our public education system;
• Identify all children harmed by the cheating and provide them with options for regaining ground on their education.
• A thorough examination of the district’s failures will help guide changes that will prevent future cheating.
2. Reform EPISD to strengthen the organization against corruption.
• Ensure the internal audit function is made fully independent with the ability to investigate all functions of EPISD including the superintendant and the school board;
• Revamp all purchasing policies and contract controls to make sure that taxpayers are getting the best value at the lowest cost.
3. Focus teacher’s time and energy on teaching, not testing. We need to remove all bonuses, incentives and disincentives that focus all of the administrator’s and teacher’s time on teaching to the test. Teaching to the test has degraded the quality of education in our classrooms, run off quality teachers and administrators and turned off students from learning.
4. Instead of hiding the hardest to teach kids, work on putting the resources and talent in place to build a path to success for every kid.
