EA is closing the Asia Pacific The Old Republic servers and making local players go via the USA (which I can only imagine hamstrings the experience). Given what's just happened with SimCity - how do you feel about a publisher with one hand forcing you to connect to a server to play a single player game, while with the other closes local servers for a game only a few years old?

Once upon a time, in a small white house in the rural-est realms of an already infinitesimal town (more like a conglomerate, really), there lived a small (four-ish-years-old) boy named Ben Greer. He lived with his mom and his dad (and some combination of a small white dog, three cats, and a sister. Can't pinpoint the exact moment in time).

His dad had a top-of-the-line computer that ran both DOS and Windows 3.0, and sometimes, he would play the most spectacular of games on it. Ben's room was right across the hall, so he would often come and watch. One of the most intriguing games was SimCity 2000, a game where you could design your own city and try to balance its economy! Being such a young child, Ben rarely understood what was going on in the game, but was nonetheless fascinated by the prospect of building buildings.

Now, one day, Ben's dad stepped out of the room (as people often do) and had left SimCity running! When Ben wandered into this room, and saw the throne by the magic box open, he eagerly rushed in and began trying to make his mark on that tiny virtual world. He started clicking icons and pressing buttons sporadically and haphazardly.

All of a sudden, a tornado appears, and starts ripping structures to pieces! A shocked Ben panics and presses another button, hoping to make the tornado stop, and a giant robot spider descends from on high and begins to lay waste to skyscrapers in another part of the city. Sound[s] of fire, alarms, and of monuments to human achievement being turned to rubble blared from the speakers. The fire spread from one building to the next. People were dying, and there was nothing the little boy could do to make it stop. So he ran back to his room, hid under his covers in a little ball, and cried--traumatized for life.

So last night, now that I'm an adult and even more fascinated with the mechanics of the game and more than capable of interpreting buttons, I thought I'd give the newest SimCity a try. After all, I got it for free at GDC13. Things were looking pretty good. I was about to plant some trees in response to a complaint about air pollution, when I receive a news bulletin claiming that there has been a zombie break out, and my city is dying, and there's not a thing I can do to stop it. And being the man that I am today, I hid under my covers in a little ball and cried. But this time, I had tacos.
