The Emir of Qatar offers a half dozen Greek islands
The wealthy ruler has the intention to build palaces for his three wives and 24 children.
The emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, offered for the modest sum of 8.5 million euros (11 million dollars), six Greek islands of the Ionian Sea, the Guardian reported in its edition of March 4.
At the head of a wealthy Gulf state gas, Emir Hamad was launched recently and with billions of dollars in many investments around the world.
For its latest acquisition, the poorest country in the euro zone, the Emir, one of the richest men in the world, had to negotiate and wait 18 months.
"Greece is the kind of places. Even when you buy an island, even if you are the Emir of Qatar, it takes a year and a half that the formalities are done," said the Guardian Advocate Business Ioannis Kassianos.
The islands, called Echinades are part of the archipelago of the Ionian Islands located along Acarnania. The emir would have been love at first sight four years ago, having anchored his luxury yacht in the islands and discovered the beautiful beaches it contains.
And the emir may not stop at this first purchase. "They have a fund of several hundred million dollars, and AFAIK they want to buy the whole archipelago of 18 islands," says Kassianos.
To offer these islands, however, the emir to negotiate. The first island, Oxia, was proposed 7 million ($ 9 million) before its Australian owners agree to part with them for five million euros (6.5 million dollars). Denis Grevias family, who owned five other islands, also reviewed the price down. "My family owned the island for over 150 years, but we do not have the means to keep them longer. We are very happy to have sold. They are on the market for almost 40 years," says Grevias.
With its sandy beaches, its olive trees, the Virgin Islands are a great place for investors. But the objective of the Emir of Qatar would build palaces for his three wives and 24 children. The architects have already moved to establish plans.
Architects who, however, may fall on a bone, notes the Guardian: Greek law limiting the area of 250 square meters in homes regardless of the surface of the land on which they are built. "The Emir said that the toilets were 250 square meters and its cuisine alone stretched over 1,000 square meters," notes Mr. Kassianos.

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has taunted Roberto Mancini by insisting that Robin van Persie would never have joined Manchester City.
City boss Mancini claimed last week that van Persie's fine form for much of the season is the only reason United are on course to win the Premier League title.
Ferguson's team are 15 points clear of second-placed City heading into Monday's Manchester derby at Old Trafford and van Persie has played a key role with 19 league goals since his £24 million ($37 million, 28-million-euro) move from Arsenal in August.
Mancini, who has been keen to play down talk of United being vastly superior to City, thought he was going to sign van Persie himself before Ferguson stepped in to steal the Dutch striker.
And Ferguson has rubbed salt into Mancini's wounds by claiming Persie was always going to snub City once United joined the race for his signature.
Asked if City would have been stronger with van Persie, Ferguson said: "It's hypothetical, he was never going to City.
"He's been fantastic for us, a really good footballer," he was quoted as saying by British media.
"We needed a bit of maturity up front and he's been terrific.
"The improvement is not just through Robin but even when he doesn't score he's a fantastic footballer."
Van Persie's goals have dried up lately, with just one in his last 12 games, but Ferguson expects the Dutch star to rediscover his form soon.
"That will change. He will get goals," Ferguson said.
