The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that 79,000 deaths per year are the direct result of excessive alcohol consumption. It is the third leading cause of death (life-style related) in the nation and the leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 24.

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Compliance, Mr. Maruf Akinderu-Fatai, on Sunday said it was necessary to seek the views of relatives of victims of Boko Haram attacks before the Federal Government grants amnesty to members of the sect.
Akinderu-Fatia, who spoke with one of our correspondents, said it would be wrong for the Federal Government to consider amnesty for members of the sect without seeking the views of those who had been seriously hurt by their attacks.
He said there could be a reduction of insecurity in the country if Nigerians, through a national conference, agreed to live as one nation.
Akinderu-Fatai said, “There is no right thinking Nigerian that will not be worried at the present condition we find ourselves in terms of insecurity. I believe the problem is fundamental and granting amnesty will not solve the problem.
“Although I have nothing against it, but how do you grant amnesty to someone, who has committed crime against humanity. Are you going to start granting amnesty to those who have destroyed lives and properties through massive bombings?
“Before you do that, you should sit down to agree with those, who have lost relatives as a result of the terrorist attacks to find out if they agreed to let bygones be bygones or we will just start with the issue of granting them amnesty like that?
“I do not believe in that. In my mind, I think we do not really believe in ourselves as a nation because we have yet to agree on whether we want to stay together as one.”
Meanwhile, a human rights crusader, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, on Sunday warned President Goodluck Jonathan against granting amnesty to members of the sect.
Abayomi, in a statement entitled, ‘No to amnesty! I say No! If we must die, let us not die like dogs’, warned Jonathan not to negotiate with members of the sect that he described as “extremists”.
He said, “They (Northern leaders) should tell us what will be the purpose of negotiation with illiterates, who find power in guns, who insist we should return by force to the Stone Age. Will amnesty change their awful believe that “to kill is a righteous service to Allah.
“Shout it on the mountain top. No to amnesty for Boko Haram; no to amnesty, for what is amnesty in Nigeria at any rate other than another corrupt appeasement of illegality and evil.”

Social fragmentation and productivity:
In our society, disconnect exists between short-term interests and long-term goals at individual level. This disconnect creates anxiety/frustration because daily life/work feels meaningless. Our society has been experiencing fragmentation (during the last decade particularly) badly; and the necessary ‘glue’ (social support networks) has almost faded away. Mistrust is pervasive in our relations and as a result inter-personal links have weakened. Due to weak social relations, individuals are left alone to deal with their momentary issues or day-to-day life. On account of the broken social networks, planning for future has become difficult; consequently, there is a weak link between our present and the future. Accordingly, future comes to us as a surprise (not through our planning and effort). As a result, we lose confidence in our individual abilities and also as a nation. Consequently, our individual productivity goes down and also the national productivity. To put the same in another way, social fragmentation has weakened our team approach at organization level. Due to lack of team work, our nation is losing synergetic effects. There is no appropriate governance and the nation continues to face lack of direction. As a result, the time and energies of individuals are wasted away and the nation keeps becoming lethargic and less productive (our GDP can go high if social fragmentation is addressed duly; this actually is the job of our government but can be done through a collective effort by educationists or by media).

Govt raises panel on framework for climate services
FOLLOWING a United Nations-wide initiative to improve and increase access to climate information, the Federal Government last week inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee on National Framework for Application of Climate Services, (NFACS) that will provide accurate, relevant and user-focussed climate services in the country.
An estimated 70 countries, many of them in Africa, have inadequate climate services and are ill-equipped to meet the challenges of both natural variations in the climate and human induced climate change.
The main goal of the NFACS is to enable better management of the risks of climate variability and change and adaptation to climate change, through the development and incorporation of science-based climate information and prediction into planning, policy and practice on the global, regional and national scale.
The committee, which is headed by the Minister of National Planning Commission, (NPC) Dr. Shamshudeen Usman, also has the Ministers of Aviation, Agriculture and Rural Development, Environment, Water Resources, Health, Works, Science and Technology and Transport as members, while the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) is to provide the secretariat.
Vice President Namadi Sambo, while inaugurating the panel at the Presidential Villa Abuja, said it is saddled with the responsibility of mapping out a national framework for application of climate services.
Sambo said the raising of the committee had received the blessing of President Goodluck Jonathan following recommendations by the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, as a result of the early weather warning memorandum premised on last year’s rainy season’s flood disaster that has caused great losses to the nation.
The vice president stressed that the warning was timely considering the observable effects of global climate change and its resultant consequences in the forms of rise in sea level shift...
