Oilsands employment to balloon: report

Alberta’s oilsands is expected to see a 70% increase in employment over the next 10 years, says a report from the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada.

The study, released April 4, states there will be 31,850 job vacancies in the oilsands by 2022.

Half will be due to INDUSTRIAL EXPANSION in the region
while the remaining openings will be due to TURNOVER and RETIREMENT rates.

The skills shortage even extends to indirect, external industries the oilsands relies on, such as manufacturing and construction.

“Even if expansion plans FALL SHORT expectations, the oil sands sector still needs over 6,500 workers in the next 10 years just to replace RETIREES,” says Cheryl Knight, executive director of the organization.

“If everything GOES according TO PLAN, the oilsands’ workforce will grow by an additional 16,000. Once you throw in turnover, we’re talking about nearly 32,000 job openings over a decade. That’s significant.”

The report also states that between 2011 and 2012, the oilsands created 2,100 new jobs.

“FINDING enough SKILLED WORKERS will be a challenge,” says Knight. “To meet the challenge and sustain growth into the future, new approaches to technology, collaboration, transportation, the environment and labour are being developed.”

The recent federal budget indicates Ottawa is aware of this industry growth, shifting SUPPORT BEHIND TRADES programs.
The federal government hopes to fill nearly 220,000 job vacancies across Canada by reaching out to the disabled, youth and Aboriginals.

When the budget was released in late March, Fort McMurray-Athabasca MP Brian Jean said a significant number of those jobs will be in the oilsands.
However, a number of these new jobs will go to (FILIPINO) skilled IMMIGRANTS, and Ken Chapman of the Oil Sands Developers Group says the region can be more accommodating to (FILIPINO) FOREIGN WOKERS.

“The last census saw about 15% of the POPULATION here CAME FROM from outside of Canada (PHILIPPINES).

That should be sufficient to have, at least on a visiting basis, IMMIGRATION COUNSELLING so workers can deal with IMMIGRATION ISSUES HERE, NOT IN VANCOUVER, Edmonton or Calgary,” Chapman told Today in January.
“We need to give them more flexibility, make it easier to become citizens, easier for their families to come over if they’re here long-term.”
Chapman would also like to see language classes for promising skilled workers, rather than see them turned away due to a language barrier.
“If they’re qualified and good on the tools but have problems in language, let’s help them and not reject them,” he said.
