My excitement is building for this fight scheduled on April 13 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. I disagree with many boxing fans and insiders who say that this is a difficult match for Donaire. Nonito has long convinced me that he is the best Fil-Am boxer of this generation since his knockout of Darchinyan with a single left hook in 2007. It is my opinion that Nonito is the most scientific boxing technician of all the active Fil-Am boxers today. I am convinced even he does not know how much power he has particularly in his left hand. There was a look of surprise in his face after he knocked out Darchinyan and Montiel. I have observed that Nonito’s left hook has different variations: jab-hook, shovel-hook and an overhand left. In addition, Donaire has developed his right cross as a new weapon as displayed in his fight against Nishioka.
Those who say Donaire lacks defense because he holds his left hand low to his side instead of up high covering his left cheek are sadly mistaken and their comments only show their lack of boxing knowledge. This defensive stance is called the “Philly Shell Defense”. Pancho Villa (didoSphere-THE ORIGINAL PACMAN) one of Asia’s greatest boxers employed this defensive style. Current practitioners of this style include Floyd Mayweather, James Toney and Adrian Broner. To employ this defensive stance the boxer stands slightly sideways to his opponent and positions the lead hand horizontally across his mid-section while holding his dominant hand close to the side of his face forming an “L” shape. This is a stance that works well for counter punchers because he can roll off punches over his lead shoulder and counter quickly with a variety of punches such as an overhand right, left hook and upper cuts. The opponent may run into an elbow if he manages to get close to the defender. Also in this stance the left hook becomes more powerful because it originates from way down the boxer’s hip.
Rigondeaux is no push over but at least on paper he looks like he is “made to order” for Donaire. He seems open for Nonito’s left hook and too short to land a counter left cross of his own as long as Donaire keeps his left foot outside Rigo’s right. Yes I agree if Rigo penetrates the Philly Shell Defense and Nonito gets hit with a clean overhand left to the chin or a left upper cut to the body, Nonito can get hurt since Rigo possesses a one punch knockout in his left hand. But the way I see it, Rigo would either fight defensively; get on his bicycle like he did in his fight against Marroquin in which case he will lose by decision or counter punch with Donaire in which case he will get knocked out. I am more worried about head clashes and Rigondeaux’s dirty trick of grabbing his opponent’s head with his right hand and punching with the left.
Prediction: Donaire by TKO, inside 9 rounds.
