Getting ready for community of scholars this morning and I had to confront a pretty, stylish and very professional looking woman in the mirror, a far cry from the pigtails and denim, department of defense against the dark arts shirt wearing girl I was yesterday...

So many things... What does age mean? I am, unequivocally past the point where I can deny being an adult and YET, I do it in basic ways almost daily. I also have to realize that for me, being an adult will never mean knowing where my keys are or finding the other shoe I wanted when I need it. Instead it means knowing and making accommodations for my limitations... Is that what it is for everyone? Is the idea that we will someday have it "all together" so detrimental that it prevents us from leading a fully realized life?

The newest release of EA’s SimCity has become the center of a lot of attention. Why? Unlike past SimCity games, SimCity (2013) has been released as an entirely multiplayer community. This ‘Always-Connected’ mode has caused a lot of complaints from the fan bases. These complaints are valid being that not only have players compelled to play on EA’s server, but because of the instability of the server, many players were unable to connect, forcing EA to take the servers down in order to fix the issue. What a way to launch a game!

EA has commented to many sources that they purposely did not provide for an offline mode because it didn’t ‘fit in with the developer’s vision’. Doing this despite the wishes of their fans has created somewhat of an ill-repute for them. Not only have players protested and made clear of their problems regarding the game, others have found ways to disable the always on function and play in an offline mode. Discovering that this was possible caused an even larger outrage due to the knowledge that EA could’ve easily run offline, yet they forced their players to participate on the EA servers.

Some fans admit feelings of betrayal saying that EA chose their own visions over the ultimate wants of their consumers. No matter how many innovations EA puts in place, there should always be sufficient consideration to what the fan wants. Because EA broke this cardinal rule they have received a lot of speculation resulting in them rushing to defend themselves. They have told fans a variation of excuses highlighting the game’s best features and their hope for a more socially based game. There have also been rumors of a release of an offline mode. But will that be enough to quell the flurry of disappointed players?

All things considered, this issue may be a matter of personal preference more than anything. There is a constant clash between the social gamer and the introvert. In the game developing world there should always be a place for consideration and representation of these different personalities as well as the thoughts, needs and feelings of each individual player. However, the mold has to be broken occasionally. It’s rare for a large developer to deviate from their fanbase in order to implement somewhat of a risky concept. Usually deviations from the status quo is reserved for indie game developers like us, who have less to lose if our idea goes awry. It is expected that EA would receive some slack. Their biggest mistake might have been their lack of unity. If you’re going to introduce a new product, having a united front and a solid case would better protect you from criticism. Their inconsistent statements made in a scramble to defend themselves shows a lack of preparedness for handling the criticism of their fan community which they had to have foreseen happening.

So, when Simcity 2013 came out i bought it, stupid i know, after a few days playing it i realised it was the most broken game i had ever played, rang ea up about a refund of the £45 i payed for this broken smut, they wouldn't. Since i payed through paypal, i opened a dispute to get my money back, now the dispute has ended, i have my money back, they havent taken simcity off my account and because i bought it during the broken to all hell period, they sent me a free Dead Space 3, CHEERS! :D
