Finished my "Author's Note" for the program of A SUPERHERO - The McDonogh Production that goes to print today:

Say “superhero” and you’re likely to get some images involuntarily popping into your head. Maybe you think of capes. Maybe you think of muscles. Flying. Power. Maybe you think of Superman. It’s also likely you think fiction. Not real. Impossible.

Well, I don’t like impossible.

In the 9 years I’ve been developing A Superhero, as you can probably imagine, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about superheroes. It started with a passion for the epic, brassy, heroic film scores of John Williams (Superman, Star Wars), Danny Elfman (Batman, Spiderman) and others. But gradually it began to shift towards the idea of exploring: what if superheroes were real.

Author Anne Rice (who had recently just re-discovered her faith after being an atheist for 38 years) was asked by Time Magazine if she believes in vampires since she always writes about them. Her response was: “Not at all. For me, supernatural characters [are] a way to talk about life and reality.”

Without really intending them to be, Anne Rice’s words have been a relatively accurate framework for my relationship to this not-so-small project called A Superhero. Since I began writing it, I have experienced the best times in my life and the worst — times where I have felt invincible and times where I have just about given up on myself. It’s in these moments — the darkest ones — that I think, just as one is most likely to see a rainbow after a storm, one is most likely to see a superhero.

Yes, Superman has incredible physical powers, but if you’re spiraling to your death from a great height and you begin to accept that your life may be over momentarily and someone swoops in out of nowhere to catch you, it might not be the incredible flying or the larger-than-life muscles that are going through your mind. I think it’s possible, and rather likely, you might be thinking about how you had just given up on your life until this person caught you and gave you hope you’ll survive.

Don’t we all have that power?

What if a superhero doesn’t just mean external, physical strength? Can’t we recognize internal, emotional powers as superheroic? Have we not all felt how much strength it takes sometimes to love someone who hates you? How much strength it requires to forgive someone who has wronged you? How much endurance it requires to keep going through adversity after adversity? Have we not all had a darkest moment in our lives?

If our world has ever needed superheroes, it is now. What a moment to awaken the powers inherent within us to bring to the world what Martin Luther King, Jr. so eloquently observed: “Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”

There is at least one big difference between me and Anne Rice. If Time Magazine were to ever ask me whether I believed in superheroes because I always write about them, I think I might have to say... “maybe.”
