London Study Tour 2013
5th March 2013 student report by Hassan Nasif Rasheed
"The day started off at 9.30 , we took the London underground with Susanna Darch from the British Youth Council who accompanied us to the Westminster and not far away was the glorious enactment ; the big ben. Westminster is known throughout the world for its grand architecture, long rich history and as a mother of the representative democratic system.
After the mandatory security checks we were ushered into Westminster hall, a majestic hall built over a thousand years ago by king William II, it is the oldest gest surviving portion of Westminster as the rest of the building was destroyed in a great fire in 1895 and was rebuilt based on the gothic architectural designs of a man named Charles Barry during the Victorian rule.
At Westminster hall we met our tour guide Camilla who briefed us about the tour at Norman Porche and then took us down the path the queen herself would follow when she would visit Westminster for the parliament opening ceremony each year. We were first taken to the entryway to the queen’s private chambers where she would put on her robe. The room hosts a throne built for Queen Victoria which had her initials marked on them and had not been sat by any other reigning monarch since her death. Its noteworthy how traditions, formalities and order seem to be of the utmost importance here in comparison to the Maldives. As for example I have not even once been to the one and only National Museum and I have never seen any of my peers or elders show much interest in the place either. Behind the throne to the left was a large portrait of Queen Victoria and to the right was her consort prince Albert. The room was decorated with a King Arthur tales theme.
Then on we headed straight north towards the Lords room but between that and the Queen’s robing room we passed through the royal gallery. The decorations on the walls here portray different significant moments in British military history such as ‘the death of nelson’ at the battle of Trafalgar and the famous battle of Waterloo in 1815. The ceiling was paneled with lions and Tudor roses. This symbolized the union of the houses of York and Lancaster.
Next we were in the Lords chamber, without a doubt the most beautiful and grand room I have ever laid eyes on. The throne of the monarch and its canopy was indeed majestic. Near the Queens throne was a woolsack which the Lord Speaker would sit during the House of Lords proceedings. The woolsack is packed with wool from all Commonwealth nations.
After passing through the central lobby we were back in Westminster hall where we headed to observe the House of Commons proceedings. We were lucky that day for the MP’s were discussing matters to do with foreign affairs and the commonwealth and we actually got the chance to hear the name of our nation come up in question in the House of Commons.
We were also fortunate to have lunch with David Ammes MP and Karen Lumley MP, where they quite openly shared their experiences with different matters such as social issues facing the youth in Britain, how they came to be involved in politics and so on. We were also allowed to ask questions to the MPs and a lot of our questions were under the theme of how the Maldives, a democracy in its infancy could stabilize her political situation. By the end of the session my perception about MP’s had changed.
The day came to an end an hour or so after lunch, after we observed the proceedings of the house or lords. We headed back to our hotels with our heads a lot less empty than they had been when we first stepped into the palace of Westminster. "

A couple made a deal the night of their Marriage to NOT
open the door of their room to anybody who comes
knocking in the morning for any reason! In the morning
the parents of the husband came & knocked on the
door, the husband & the wife were looking at each
other & as they agreed before, they didn't open the
door. After a while the parents of the bride came
knocking at the door to check on them, the couple were
looking at each other, then the bride dropped a tear &
started crying she said: "I cannot keep them knocking
& not open the door, I miss them already" husband
didn't say anything & he let her open the door for her
parents. Years & years passed & the couple had 5
children, the first ones were boys & the 5th was a little
girl, when she was born the father was extremely
happy that Almighty blessed him with her, & he threw
a Huge Party for her in Grand style, people were so
amazed with his joy & his happiness that they asked
him, why are you so happy with her more than you
were before with her older brothers? He answered
simply: "She is the one who will open the door for me"
Baby girls are the comfort of the eyes of their father!
They hold the key to their mothers hearts! Daughters
are really unique. They care for their parents even after
they are married. Its rightly said, "A son is a son till he
gets a Wife, a daughter is a daughter the rest of her
Life! Dedicated to all Daughters & Daughters- in- Law.

2013 Ford Escape
A Sales Success
By Ron Amadon
DAMASCUS, MD – Sales of the 2012 Ford Escape were rolling right along yet Ford rolled the dice and redesigned the crossover vehicle for 2013.
Ford is playing in a hotly contested part of the market here going up against the Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, Chevy Equinox, and Mazda CX-5. After a week behind the wheel, I can say that the Escape is more than up to the task. Many agree. In March, the Escape was the nation’s ninth best-selling vehicle with a 27 percent year over year sales gain.
For a change, the test vehicle was a more proletarian model, an SE that is the first step up in the four model Escape lineup. Keeping with that theme, it sported the middle of three engine choices, a 1.6-liter Ecoboost four rated at 178 horsepower @ 5,700 rpm and 184 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm. A 168 hp four is the base engine, with a 2.0-liter Ecoboost 240 hp four the top upgrade. The six is history.
The 1.6 was grand for buzzing around suburbia with a light, nimble feel and enough low end grunt to take advantage of openings in traffic and allow for snappy takeoffs at traffic signals.
However, out on the highway the 1.6 needed a quick downshift on hills and a bit more power for quick passing maneuvers. If you intend to haul anything of substance with the Escape it would be my recommendation to move up to the 2.0-liter engine.
The penalty in gas mileage is small. The 1.6 is EPA rated at 23-33 mpg while the 2.0-liter checks in at 22-30 mpg. Standing start runs to 60 mph take about 9 seconds with the small four with the two liter cutting that by a rather substantial two seconds. Ford says peak performance can be obtained using premium fuel on the EcoBoost engines, but they also will run on regular unleaded.
Towing capacity with the 1.6 is 2,000 pounds and that increases to 3,500 with the larger four.
With the second row seats folded, (an easy task), the Escape has 68.1 cubic feet of storage space, but that compares to 70.9 cubic feet in the Honda CR-V and 73.4 cubes in the new RAV4. Missing from the test vehicle was the ability to pass your foot under the rear bumper to raise the tailgate. If you buy an Escape, you can brag around the water cooler that it will haul 56,778 ping pong balls.
Impressions from the driver’s chair: The manually adjusted seats took a bit more fumbling than most to achieve a comfortable driving position but then were fine. The instrument pod was highly visible and major controls were an easy reach away. Materials were in line with others in its class.
In the automatic setting, the heater was slow to warm the interior on a 21-degree morning. Switching to the manual mode, with the fan at the max setting, the interior did get toasty in short order.
The base audio system cranked out some fine sounds, and favorite satellite settings could be added without referring to the owner’s manual and that’s no small thing.
Here’s a quick way to save $1,570. Pass up the much criticized My Ford/Sync system and the automatic temperature control.
On the highway, the Escape was very quiet for its class, handling was better than expected for a crossover vehicle, with wind and road noise well under control.
The optional $1,395 large sunroof was a nice addition providing spring ever appears across the nation. I would pass on the $440 cargo management system. Yet even with all that, you could stage your own Escape in the test model for $29,255.
With the 2.0-liter engine the Blue Oval folks have produced an excellent crossover that can more than hold its own with the world’s competition. DO drive one if you are about to enter the hot world of compact crossovers.
