NHS Varsity wins District opener vs Putnam City North.

The game was played last Friday night at Harve Collins, because the field at Irving was under water. The game was indeed a tense. PC North scored on a Free Kick with just over 10 minutes to go in the game. The boys tied it up with two minutes to go on a goal by Matt Hockett on an assist by Zac Terry. They then played two 10 minute scoreless overtimes and thus had to go to a shootout. All five of the NHS shooters scored ( Haydn Jones, Jorge Briones, Omar Ramirez, Matt Tidwell and Reed Shafer-Ray). NHS Goalie, Andrew Arledge, saved one of the PCN shots from the penalty spot and that was the ball game. A 2-1 win. They are now 7 - 0 for the season. If the weatherman will let us, we play at Southmoore on Tuesday.

A couple of days ago, I mentioned that I now had a Windows computer in my house. More on that:
(0) This is the first desktop I've built in over five years and the first one I've had in the house. The last one was, at the time, a beast: quad-core Q4970 with 8GB of RAM and a pretty decent ATI video card. It is now my local house server until I replace it.
(1) The specs: 4 core i7/3.5g CPU; 32GB of RAM; 240GB SSD + 2TB HDD; NVidia GTX 680 2GB video; 2 Dell 27" Ultrasharp monitors - most of you will read that like Greek, the rest are probably freaking their minds at how amazingly powerful those specs were. Special thanks go to Nicholas Beaudrot for spot-checking the parts before I bought them.
(2) This was the first time I've paid for Windows. I probably could have waited and gotten a friend at MSFT to pick up a copy at the company store on the cheap, but I wanted to pay full price since the other dozen copies of Windows I've owned before were waaaaaay pirated. You're welcome, Uncle Ballmer.
(3) This is the first copy of Windows I've used since XP. I went with Windows 7 Pro 64bit Spicy Bacon Edition. I was not disappointed: it's actually a pretty good user experience and besides some weird muscle-memory problems from using a Mac for the past 6 years, it's been pretty good.
(4) The entire rig cost me 4 large and took about 90 minutes to put together, but only because I had to spend 5 minutes staring agog at the video card, which is as big as my forearm. Seriously. I thought for a second Newegg had sent me an Asus nuclear reactor controller core when I saw it. It's insanely ridiculous. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121635)

Gaming shit:
(5) This thing doesn't mess around. Ultra graphics mode or go home. It's so serious about it, I played Oregon Trail:Ultra Graphics edition and it gave me, the player, dysentery.
(6) Did you know that in Starcraft 2 in ultra mode, when the marines and marauders fire their weapons, they have muzzle flash that will realistically illuminate the area of fire? I didn't, and this blew Stuart Axel Owen's mind.
(7) Did you know that in Diablo III in ultra mode, more loot drops when you kill monsters than in any other modes? You didn't? Ok, that's because it doesn't - I mean, who even *plays* Diablo III anymore. I'm just messing with you. But it does look damn pretty on this machine.
(8) I don't know how much money I'm also going to throw at Steam, but if you have a game suggestion from the past five years that I *must* play that wasn't on the XBox (or wasn't good on the XBox), then let me know. I'm open to suggestions.

Non-gaming shit:
(9) Yes, Virginia, computers are used for more than just games.
(10) I was surprised at how easy it was to get various development tools installed: Java, python, zsh, eclipse, github. And none of them feel ghetto, like they did five years ago: they all seem to be first-class citizens in the Windows experience. That's nice.
(11) Still, I set aside partitions for an Linux install. Probably Ubuntu. That install all depends on how well I can develop on Windows, though.
(12) I bought this rig because while I've had impressive desktops at work, I've never had something nice at home. For the next five years, I'll be using it to write some open-source software, develop a couple of personal projects in my spare time, give back to my community, and maybe, if the stars are right, write a novel. I'm not joking around, kiddos, these are real deal life goals.
