Abraham Lincoln said somethng on that battlefield in Gettysburg Pennsylvania to a massive crowd which had gathered there which I believe cannot be erased.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. Toured the battlefield at Vicksburg, MS yesterday. A must for tourists if you're in that area. Rates with Gettysburg as a decisive battle in the "troubled times". Lots of antebellum houses and buildings. Great views of the Mississippi River.

Working on an itinerary for our Gettysburg trip is both a most fun and most frustrating way to spend a Sunday morning. I'm excited that there are going to be so many great events, but have NO idea how Eric & I are going to be able to squeeze it all in!! The snow melts. Our dog has made a model of the battlefield at Gettysburg in the yard. Soldier turd bodies mark the futility of war.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. More than 50,000 soldiers lost their lives on that bloody battlefield in early July of 1863. That is more casualties than all of the Korean War or all of the Vietnam Conflict. And that 50,000 was literally 1/3 of the total number of soldiers who fought. Gettysburg also served as the tipping point of the Civil War.

What many may not have realized is that on the 50th anniversary of the battle the U.S. government offered to pay travel expenses for all surviving union and confederate soldiers to reunite on those hallowed grounds as a sign of unity and show the international community the strength of America having risen above its darkest hour. Tents were pitched on the grounds and old warriors returned to greet each other in peace. And the event closed with a speech and dedication by President Woodrow Wilson on the last day, July 4th.

I am particularly fond of one of the battle's survivors. One individual in both the crowd that fought in 1863 and then returned in 1913 for the 50th anniversary was Corporal Chester B. Church of the Michigan 5th Cavalry Regiment. Born in 1841 he was marshaled into service in 1862 and remained in service through the war’s end – his Regiment helping to block Lee's retreat and force the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Chester is my Great, Great, Great Grandfather, thus Great-Great-Great-Great Grandfather to my kids.

So what better way to make history come alive for them than to take them to Gettysburg on the 150th year and walk the grounds where he would have made camp, fought, lived, and returned in peace. I’m excited to give them the opportunity as well as take it in again for myself. When they reach those lessons in school, just imagine how far ahead on the subject they will be.

But it also makes me pause and ponder too. What will our 50th anniversary moment be for reconciling our current political divide? Especially as I don't think we've yet seen a turning point. What will be the watershed moment that turns the tide? Or are we destined to see history repeat?

Whats wrong with the people in this world People get on fb and talk bad about young men that have lost their life WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE WHERE THEY WERE in mud-hole, Iraq, back country road,Battlefield in Gettysburg,coal mine, Over in another country or right down the road from us. A young man lost his life doing what alot of us have done and some of still do playing in big ole mud hole!! No matter where or how it's a terrible thing when anyone loses their life its really heartbreaking when it's a young life

Super tired. Been to Arlington Cemetery and walked must of it. Been to Gettysburg and seen the battlefield, walked downtown and did are ghost hunting. Time for bed another busy day tomorrow
