I have been chronicling government waste of late, silly things like the IRS spending 60,000 in producing a Star Trek video, bizarre things like the government owning tens of thousands of vacant buildings, some vacant for decades, with no inventory of those properties making an exact count unknowable but sticking us with the bill for maintaining them, and craziness like giving Pakistan money to support its economy while we go over a cliff. Flagrant abuse of the public trust to be sure but in the end “only” amounting to perhaps 50 billion in waste.
I’ve had conversations and arguments over how to cut the budget and the deficit. And hopefully everyone can agree that the above could be cut with no one noticing any drop in services. But the biggest growth in Federal spending over the next decade will not come from Medicare, Obamacare, Social Security or any other wasteful federal program or activity. No, the biggest single contributor to the ballooning national debt is, the debt itself. If we didn’t have the debt we would be able to fully fund all the above mentioned programs without breaking a sweat. But the interest on the debt alone is currently the second largest expenditure the federal government has and interest rates are at historic lows right now. A slight upward movement in the interest rates charged the government could result in trillions in excess interest payments over the next decade and chokes the government out of existence regardless of any tax increases or spending cuts it attempts.
So as I have long said, it doesn’t matter what Obama wants, it doesn’t matter how passionately you believe this or that program shouldn’t be cut, they all will be unless the debt is reduced and the only way to do that is to take money from other programs and pay off the debt. The paradox is that the only way to save the entitlements and other programs for the future is to curtail them now. Small cuts now or elimination of the programs later, that is the choice we face now and if we do not act now the choice will be made for us as the debt becomes unsustainable and insurmountable and the government shuts down.
We have seen the austerity measures in other countries and the pain of the deep cuts they have had to make to avoid bankruptcy. How can private citizen’s bank deposits in Cyprus be unavailable for withdrawal and yet somehow be available for taxation? Could it happen here? You bet. And what countries will bail out the USA when it happens? And what reforms will they insist on as a condition precedent to their assistance assuming one or more can be found?
