This life is not everything. This is the ground on which to work hard for the harvest that we will enjoy in the hereafter, in shaa Allah. In this life Allah created us in so many colors, languages, and castes— some are poor, while some are rich; some are physically disabled, while some are fit; some are beautiful, while some are not.

But these distinctions are not permanent— they’re only a temporary test. After death these will all prove to be vain except our faith, ama’l (good deeds), and ikhlas, or pure heart. None of our beauty, scholarly achievement, family ties, or wealth will be of any value that day.

That day a man shall flee from his brother, from his mother and his father, from his wife and his children. For on that day every man will have enough to make him indifferent to others.
[Quran, 80: 34-37]

Maggie thatcher R.I.P
Let me start by saying that it is not because of any of her more known accomplishments. It’s not that she was Britain’s first woman prime minister and the nation’s longest-serving of the 20th century. It’s not that she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the United States, the Republican Senatorial Medal of Freedom, the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award, the Patron of the Heritage Foundation of the Grand Order of King Dmitar Zvonimir of the Republic of Croatia or that she was given the Order of Merit by Her Majesty the Queen.

It’s not that she promoted a free-enterprise economy, or that she implemented tight monetary policies to control inflation, lower taxes and reduce government spending, nope. Not even because she introduced legislation to curb the monopoly powers of trade unions and make their leadership more accountable to their members. Or not even because of all her support and work with the Northern Atlantic Alliance.

No, none of these above achievements can trump the one and truly amazing thing she did which has driven me to fall head over heels in love with this woman. Much before all of this, back in the ’40s in fact, she was involved in the creation of soft serve ice cream. You heard me right…SOFT SERVE ICE CREAM!!! :)

IS IT ACCEPTABLE TO EVER SEDATE CHILDREN ON LONG HAUL FLIGHTS?
Parents with young children, know only too well that long plane journeys can be tricky and tiresome. Some parents believe that it is ok to drug children to subdue them whilst on aeroplanes. Two parents join Phillip and Holly at 10:45 to discuss this issue - Journalist Shona Sibary, admits that she has drugged her children whilst going on a flight, and she believes it is absolutely okay to do so. Whereas mum Sonya Poulton, does not agree and thinks medication should only be used to treat illness. But what do you think? Some comments may be read out on-air.

LAUNCHING AND COMMISSIONING OF GOVERNMENT PROJECTS: A WASTE OF OUR COLLECTIVE WEALTH

During the time that Dr. Timi Alaibe was MD of NDDC, I was privileged to be amongst those invited to 'Commission' an 11km single carriage (narrow) road in Bayelsa State. Chief (Dr.) Jasper Jumbo, a Niger-Delta Chieftain and a member of the NDDC caucus invited me to come all the way from Abuja.

It was an instructively interesting experience. When we arrived at Dr. Timi Alaibe's house, getting a space inside the mansion was at a high premium. Thank God Chief Jumbo was leading the way, otherwise, I would have stayed outside. Both inside the compound and outside were jam-packed with people, Some of the women even wore ‘aso ebi’ showing how lavish the preparations were.

Because of the crowd that they needed to convey to the venue of the launch in Bayelsa state from Port Harcourt, announcement was made that all those who came with vehicles should please pack them outside the house. Several air-conditioned buses were engaged with mobile policemen leading the way and also behind the buses. The policemen were behaving as if they were going on a combat mission. I have never been so uncomfortable in my life. I actually felt we were going to be attacked on the way as the policemen were demonstrating their battle-readiness. My heart was in my mouth throughout the journey.

After driving straight to the site to inspect and commission the road, we were treated to a grand reception at a location not too far from the site. We had dancers, masquerades and all sorts. Food and drinks were in abundance.

Even though I felt privileged to be one of those invited, the question had remained in my mind: The money spent to invite people from all over the nation, pay for their flight tickets and accommodation, hire buses and engage dancers, caterers, masquerades and security men, would have been enough to construct another 2 or 3km road in Bayelsa state or elsewhere in the region. Honestly.

Why will a local government chairman, a governor or even the president spend millions (if not billons) of Naira to commission projects that they were statutorily meant to construct, establish or provide for the masses? Is it not a waste of public funds and abuse of power?

Is commissioning of projects part of the budget? I want to move a motion that henceforth, NO government at ALL level should commission projects using state funds and resources. The amount devoted to such fruitless efforts should be channeled into more productive ventures.

TV Adverts: The above also applies to TV adverts. I once placed a 1min advert during NTA network news and it cost me half a million Naira (N500,000). Yet, you find governors paying for 30mins, sometimes 1hr adverts to showcase their activities as if that was not the essence of their being there in the first place. Why waste public funds to demonstrate what you have been doing? Your works should speak for themselves and the people affected will then be your natural advocates.

Say NO! to COMMISSIONING and LAUNCHING of GOVERNMENT projects.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

MPS NEWS RELEASE

MPS teachers named finalists for state and national honors
MINNEAPOLIS – Three Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) teachers are finalists for two awards recognizing outstanding educators from across the state and the nation. Daniel Kilibarda, a third-grade teacher at Burroughs Community School, and Amy Sinness, who teaches first grade at Lucy Craft Laney Community School, are among the top 10 finalists for the 2013 Minnesota Teacher of the Year Award. Meanwhile, Christopher Pennington, a life skills teacher at Edison High School, is in the final two for the second annual Great American Teach-Off.

Teacher of the Year finalists were narrowed down from an initial pool of 135 candidates. In March, the field was trimmed to 39 semifinalists, which included four MPS teachers. The selection panel of 25 leaders in the areas of education, business, government and non-profits, will meet again on May 4 for final interviews before the winner is announced at a banquet on Sunday, May 5, at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest in Brooklyn Park.

Kilibarda, affectionately known as “Mr. K,” is considered a rock star at Burroughs Community School where he teaches third grade. At the “Meet the Teacher” night before the start of each school year, Kilibarda greets every child in his class by name at the door. He wears a tie and a smile every day. Colleagues say his love of teaching is infectious and parents praise Kilibarda’s ability to draw out each student’s strengths.

Sinness has a deep connection with her students and their families to ensure all students receive a quality education. She demonstrates an unwavering dedication to teaching, turning down numerous leadership opportunities outside of the classroom in order to continue her daily work with students. She feels especially lucky to be teaching amazing students on the north side of Minneapolis.

The Great American Teach-Off is a nationwide search for innovative teachers who are preparing students for success and empowering them to learn in different ways. Pennington is in final round of the second annual Great American Teach-Off. Voting is open until 1:59 a.m. (CDT), Monday, April 7. The grand prize is a $10,000 classroom grant.

Pennington, who has taught at Edison for three years, found creative ways to raise money to start the school’s cooking class. A state fair-winning bread baker (courtesy of his mother-in-law’s recipe), Pennington asked his colleagues to chip in $20 in return for a few loaves of fresh baked bread throughout the school year. That trade raised enough money for Pennington to purchase a new stove, two refrigerators and basic utensils for the cooking class.

Edison students and staff members describe Pennington as an awesome teacher who brings great energy to the school. Assistant principal Carly Jarva noted several projects Pennington has spearheaded at the school, including a bike shop, greenhouse and woodshop. Pennington’s Teach-Off biography says he provides hands-on learning experiences for his students to prepare them for the real world, like learning job skills or practical life skills.
