OK, I'm going to say something not very popular in gaming circles. I am tired of established companies using Kickstarter.
First of all, Kickstarter is not a money-printing machine. There is a finite (albeit undefinable) limit to the money available for Kickstarter projects. When a project is successful, it takes away from that pool. The pool is refreshed often, and again it's hard to define, but one backing of a project means there's one less backing available for other projects.
By itself, that's not a problem--that's capitalism, folks. If you want more backing, make a better product. But here's the thing: Established companies don't need to crowdsource funding. They can make products the traditional way because they've been doing that successfully for years--they don't need to crowdsource. By using Kickstarter to get their funding, they are taking something away from smaller companies and/or individual creators when they don't need to. (Disclaimer: I am one of those.)
Steve Jackson Games makes all of those Munchkin games. Are they really so cash-poor that they needed to crowdsource Ogre? Days of Wonder has a kickstarter for Small World 2. They managed to publish Small World 1 without much trouble. Why can't they do that again?
I'm not saying such companies are immoral or anything drastic like that. And while I won't define what Kickstarter "should" be doing or what is was designed to do, it obviously filled a niche: People could get funding for creative projects when they normally couldn't. Established, successful entities like Steve Jackson Games and Days of Wonder have proven they can get funding without it. Therefore, I believe they should stay away from Kickstarter--they don't need it while others do, and they're making it harder for the ones who need funding to get it. (Not stealing or anything like that, just marking it more difficult.)
Yes, Kickstarter is about people voting with their dollars to get products they want. It about people supporting products directly instead of the old "design, publish, hope to get sales" model. But it's also about making projects succeed that would otherwise never see the light of day. How would you feel if Hasbro launched D&DNext as a Kickstarter? What about Disney kickstarting Star Wars 7?
There is a good argument about publishers using Kickstarter to gauge demand. If lots of people are willing to back a game, that means it's a game that will sell. This allows the company to avoid publishing a dud. I understand and sympathize, but there must be some other way than doing a kickstarter. Create a site and ask for input. Make a video and see if it goes viral. Besides, these companies can likely afford to publish a dud.
Again, this rant (yes, it has become a rant, hasn't it?) is not meant to attack larger businesses who use Kickstarter. I'm just saying they shouldn't because 1) they don't need it, and 2) they are taking something away from smaller businesses and/or individuals.
