Every time I tell someone about being an otaku or talk about my exploits of being an

otaku people always say “you know that’s not a good word, right?” Going on to say how the word is an insult. Yet very few actually give out an intelligent argument about why the word is an insult. Here in the U.S. fans of Japanese animation and comics use the word as a badge of pride.
Hell we even have two cons using the word Otaku. Otakon and Otaku Con to even a magazine called “Otaku USA”.
Whenever someone talks about the word Otaku and how they study the culture of Japan and pop culture of Japan they always go on about how their professor says the word is an insult.

The word Otaku taken loosely translated means house. In modern Japanese slang,

With all the geek pride that is roaming around to the point of at least 2-3 reality shows poping out of the wood work due the now being a geek or nerd is cool . Why should fans of Jpop culture NOT use the word Otaku to describe themselves why not call yourself an otaku based on that definition alone.

Yes I am aware of the Otaku Killer.
That was an unfortunate incident but the actions of one man should not represent all Otaku no matter how horrific.

This reminds me of the case study by the author of “Seduction of the Innocent” who argued and almost put the comic book industry out of business mind you about how kids behavior in juvenile hall were influenced by comic books but look how that turned out.
Comic books are NOW one of the main sources for Hollywood to make big budget movies and soon anime and manga will be as well in America or at least more live action
Movies made in Japan with the way things are going with in Japan. I.E. live action movies for Ranma ½, Kenshin, Gantz etc.
The popularity of comic books has gone up.

Overall based on what people are saying and from what I have read myself I do not see a reason why fans of Japanese popular culture here in the states should NOT use the word Otaku.
