A shuddering episode in Singapore - the final part

"Sorry Fen, I do not know Mahjong; further I do not gamble and I have to leave for my lecture pretty fast. Fen left the balcony saying 'cowardly Indian beggars' and vanished into the the bed room.

Now things started to oraganise in my head; only Singapore citizens could buy HDB apartments, a very rich man would not even rent such a small unfurnished flat as an office, all of them were emphasising Fen's gambling interests and that they had collected all information about me and family etc. This was certainly an organised well planned game. I knew I was trapped among a gang of four goondas on the 18th floor. I had a shudder. How to escape from there? If they suspected that I entertained some doubt, I could be killed or my family would be in danger. They could easily push me out from that height. Although I was strong, one against four would not work. These people were dangerous and could go to any extent to escape from police and law. I decided to act innocent.

I moved to the living room in a composed way and sat with the other three. I requested Lee for some cold water and thanked him for doing that. Mr Murthy started to talk to me and the following conversation took place in Tamil.

Murthy: How can he abuse you and us, the Indians. I feel hurt. We will prove that we are not cowards.

Me: Murthy, I do not know this game. How can I play?

Murthy: Do not worry, I was an expert in Mahjong; only that I have not been playing it for some time now. You don't play; just sit with me. I will play for you and win.

Me: I have not brought any money.

Murthy: Do not worry. We can use your car or I would pay now and you repay me later.

Me: No Murthy, that is not nice. I need to change this car for a bigger one. I do not like to take loans from others and create liabilities for me. I will draw money from the bank and will come here tonight or tomorrow at sometime convenient to all.

I said in English : Now I have to go for the lecture. Thank you all very much. Will meet you fast.

I got up and shook hands with all. Fen too came out and I said "Mr Fen, you have not seen the car yet. You would like it. I will bring it later in the evening or tomorrow. Please tell Francis the time I should come here. He can inform me. Thank you all very much".

I walked slowly towards the door. Only Francis accompanied me to the door. I was a little scared; I wanted to reach my car and leave that place at the earliest. I kept mum; I did not inform the police or narrate the incident to anyone in my office for fear of retaliation. We used to stay in a huge isolated house in Prince George's Park. I told Chellam not to open the door for any stranger or venture outside alone with Arun (who was a baby) in my absence. We were very careful for many months. I think I was wise and had acted in the correct way.

After about four years or so, I read in the Straits Times that a gang had been arrested and the reported story was similar. They had cheated a lot of people. The arrested gang was bigger and I knew that 'the gang of four' was part of a larger group operating in Singapore at that time.
