Okay, this subject seems to be very touchy, but I'm really looking for some insight from my FB friends. As most of you know I have been an Itinerate drama/music minister for the past two decades. Most of our dealings have been with Calvary Chapel's (but always looking to branch out).
When we started the most nobel model we could find was to go to a church or event with no minimum payment required. We'd simply come for what could be afforded. That was appreciated for quite a few years, but now there has been a change. Most churches or event organizers are insisting on a number. In fact this is happening even a places we've gone to for many years. All of a sudden the "whatever's in your budget" response to the fee question is considered shady or annoying.
A couple of years ago we got a call from the new accounting guy from a large church we'd been to many times after ministering there, accusing us of trying to take advantage of them by trying to obtain payment without a contract. He said the P.O. submitted by the pastor had no standing, and he wasn't giving us a cent, and asked what we were trying to pull. ( It finally was resolved, but we really hated being falsely accused).
For years we have seen honorariums or offerings that are so generous that we're blown away and some that are so small that we feel completely discouraged. Interestingly when we have received an especially generous offering it has been at a small or Medium size church.
It is clear that at some places, the fact that we're cheap has made them value our ministry much less. Sometimes they forget to announce that we're going to be there, and a just a hand full of people show up. I try harder to do a good job when that happens, because then at least someone has made that event honorable, and I think it pleases the Lord!
I have long time ministry relationships that I value very much, and would never want to do anything that would tarnish those, however a new policy on our part seems to be in order, at least in some cases.
My wife, Jodi, has always done our booking and we have always tried to remain very accessible and personal.
I've been told that the personal approach makes some pastors or administrators uncomfortable, and they would rather deal with a third party (like an agent). Now when someone comes with no set fee, it is assumed that they make their living elsewhere and are not dependent on the ministry for their sustenance.
Also, I been told that it is assumed that the number that is given by the artist is a negotiation starting point, and that your "real number" will be agreed upon after discussion.
I have resisted changing our policy, but even some of the Calvary's are insisting on a set fee, and a cleaner, more business-like arrangement. If that's what would serve best then I'm willing to go with it.
We're thinking of instituting a sliding fee with a min and a max, based on the size of the church.
It's been very difficult to approach this subject because no matter what, some rush to instant judgement. Seems folks have no problem relegating Christian artists to the dregs of society. The church has never quite known what to do with it's artists.
I'm not trying to take advantage of anyone, and I'm not complaining, but I'd really like to know if someone out there has some word of wisdom.
Is there a way that we can deal with this subject, make a living, and not bring shame upon ourselves or the cross.
