IPOH: Housewife Chong Fong Tai has always been extra careful of snatch thieves when she is at the bank to withdraw money.

But on March 6, "something" let her guard down and she lost RM5,000 near her home in Kampung Baru Bercham.

"It was as if I had a spell cast on me. I was only aware that I had been robbed after I got home," Chong told a press conference organised by Bercham Rukun Tetangga chairman Tan Swee Kong on Monday.

"I was aware of what was happening but I still do not how I was robbed," the 55-year-old added.

There had been 10 previous cases of elderly people being hypnotized and robbed, mostly near the wet market, according to Tan.

Recalling the incident, Chong said she had taken out the money for her grandchild's education expenses and to pay her car and house loans.

"Minutes after I walked out of the bank, a man dropped a stack of RM100 bills, easily worth thousands of ringgit.

"I shouted to him but he kept on walking," Chong said.

Another man, in his 40s, had picked up the money and told Chong he would share it with her. But Chong insisted that the money be returned to the man.

Chong said she then felt like she was "in a daze" while the man kept talking.

She then saw the earlier man walked back to her. He slipped a wallet into her pocket and told her to go home and not to look back.

"For unknown reason, I did what I was told and only realised that I have been robbed after I reached home," she added. The wallet contained cut-up newspapers.

Tan urged the people, especially the elderly, not to go to banks alone.

"Of late, there have been a lot of cases of elderly folks being robbed.

"If possible, please get the companion of family members or friends to the banks or other venues," he said.

Only 88,000 new jobs created in March and the unemployment rate slips from 7.7% to 7.6%? No, it’s not the “new math,” it’s the participation rate. March’s participation rate came in at 63.3%, the last time the rate was that low, Jimmy Carter was President (of the U.S.) and it snowed in the Sahara Desert! Friday’s data identified that U.S. employer hiring was at its’ slowest pace in nine months (88k). U.S. equity markets opened sharply down and never had a chance on Friday as some traders attempted to absorb the confidence hurting data while others took profits and went home. On Friday, the DOW closed down 41.01 points to 14,561.1, the S&P shed 6.71 points to 1,553.27 and the Nasdaq lost 21.12 points to 3,203.86.

Prices on U.S. 10yr treasuries jumped sending yields to their lowest point of the year. Traders are worried that the labor markets, which seemingly had been gaining traction, have taken a turn for the worst as U.S. austerity measures are beginning to take their toll on the economy. The benchmark 10yr closed up 18 ticks to yield 1.70.

MBS had an eventful day on Friday after the jobs release as fast money buying, servicer buying and a lack of supply in the morning ripped FN 3s ~9 ticks tighter (outperform) to swaps. The afternoon saw some additional supply and profit taking by money managers, as the FN 3s gave back 3+ ticks to close ~5+ ticks tighter on the day. The rally interestingly did not have much of an effect on production coupon rolls, setting the stage for Monday as the market will take its cue from overseas buying. The FN 2.5 was the best performer in the stack with the FN 6s being the worst.

Euro zone stocks are advancing today after suffering the largest three day drop in eight months. Traders are awaiting the results from Alcoa Inc. which kicks off earnings season. U.S. equity futures are all pointing higher this morning suggesting that they may wipe out the losses suffered on Friday. There are no economic reports due today. The U.S. Treasury will sell $35bln of 3 month Bills and $3bln of 6 month Bills today.
