‘Boko Haram, victims’ families must agree on amnesty’

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Legislative Compliance, Mr. Maruf Akinderu-Fatai, on Sunday said it was necessary to seek the views of relatives of victims of Boko Haram attacks before the Federal Government grants amnesty to members of the sect.

Akinderu-Fatia, who spoke with one of our correspondents, said it would be wrong for the Federal Government to consider amnesty for members of the sect without seeking the views of those who had been seriously hurt by their attacks.

He said there could be a reduction of insecurity in the country if Nigerians, through a national conference, agreed to live as one nation.

Akinderu-Fatai said, “There is no right thinking Nigerian that will not be worried at the present condition we find ourselves in terms of insecurity. I believe the problem is fundamental and granting amnesty will not solve the problem.

“Although I have nothing against it, but how do you grant amnesty to someone, who has committed crime against humanity. Are you going to start granting amnesty to those who have destroyed lives and properties through massive bombings?

“Before you do that, you should sit down to agree with those, who have lost relatives as a result of the terrorist attacks to find out if they agreed to let bygones be bygones or we will just start with the issue of granting them amnesty like that?

“I do not believe in that. In my mind, I think we do not really believe in ourselves as a nation because we have yet to agree on whether we want to stay together as one.”

Meanwhile, a human rights crusader, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, on Sunday warned President Goodluck Jonathan against granting amnesty to members of the sect.

Abayomi, in a statement entitled, ‘No to amnesty! I say No! If we must die, let us not die like dogs’, warned Jonathan not to negotiate with members of the sect that he described as “extremists”.

He said, “They (Northern leaders) should tell us what will be the purpose of negotiation with illiterates, who find power in guns, who insist we should return by force to the Stone Age. Will amnesty change their awful believe that “to kill is a righteous service to Allah.

“Shout it on the mountain top. No to amnesty for Boko Haram; no to amnesty, for what is amnesty in Nigeria at any rate other than another corrupt appeasement of illegality and evil.”

The opposition Action Congress of Nigeria
and the federal government were locked in a
war of words Sunday after the ACN accused
the government of plotting to scuttle the 2015
elections and plunge the country into chaos.
The allegation unsettled Aso Rock and the
Peoples Democratic Party which quickly rushed
out counter statements accusing the ACN and
its spokesperson of a well-organised campaign
to mislead the public, discredit the person and
office of President Goodluck Jonathan, and
cause disaffection within the polity.
The ACN spokesperson, Lai Mohammed,
triggered the controversy when he alleged, at
a press conference in Lagos, that that the PDP
and the federal government had hatched a plot
to destabilize the country, make it
ungovernable and make the environment
unconducive for election in 2015.
Mr. Mohammed said that way, Mr. Jonathan
would be able to resort to extra constitutional
way to extend his tenure.
The ACN spokesperson said, “It is no longer a
secret that the PDP-led Federal Government
has failed the nation in all ramifications. To
make matters worse, the party itself is
imploding as a result of its own failings.
Against this background, the PDP is keenly
aware that it has totally lost the confidence of
all Nigerians.
“It (PDP) has now realised that if indeed the
2015 elections are free and fair and
conducted in a conducive environment, there
will be no chance for the party.
“What is the way out for the PDP? The party
has decided to go for the broke: either there
will be no elections in 2015 or the polls will be
conducted in an atmosphere of chaos, thereby
paving the way for the PDP to do what it
knows best – rig elections.
“Also being considered is a plan under which
emergency rule will be imposed on most parts
of the country, following which elections will
be put in abeyance, paving the way for tenure
elongation. Instigation of violence in hitherto
peaceful parts of the country is one of the
means to achieve this plan.
“We make bold to say that the stand of the
PDP is that having seen the handwriting on the
wall, it realises it cannot win any free and fair
elections in 2015.”
The party also alleged that the government
was masterminding the destabilization of part
of the country yet unaffected by the deadly
Boko Haram insurgency.
Mr. Mohammed said, “But now, the areas that
have been largely peaceful are being targeted
by those who will only be happy when the
whole country is in turmoil.
“A multi-billion naira contract has suddenly
been awarded for the protection of oil
pipelines in the region.
“The main beneficiary of the contract has
suddenly realised that the Unity Party of
Nigeria, formed by the respected statesman,
Chief Obafemi Awolowo, is no longer in
existence, and has thus decided to revive it.
“Just about the same time, suspected Boko
Haram members have been arrested in Lagos,
specifically at a house belonging to the
government of Bayelsa State.

Margaret Thatcher dies at 87...

A truly great leader. The mother of modern Great Britain. Becoming Prime Minister in 1979 and going on to become the longest serving Prime Minister of Great Britain, the Iron Lady led her country out of festering economic decline since the end of the 2nd World War.

Love her or hate her, with the sheer force of her no-nonsense personality combined with a sense of incredible certainty in the rightness of where she intended to lead Britain to, she started a very unpopular (at the time) change of direction, taking on all of Britain's status quo champions, especially the economically ruinous trade unions.

Britain's economic re-emergence in the mid 80s and all the way to today came as a result of her resolute defeat of these forces of backwardness. She successfully led a modern day revolution...

Many countries today badly need their own Margaret Thatchers. I can think of a few myself...

Rest in Peace, great woman!
