Hadith Explanation

Defeated Nations

“Allah's Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: 'You will indeed follow the ways of those before you, hand span by hand span, and an arms length after another. Even if they enter into a lizard’s hole, you will follow them.’ We (the Sahaba) asked, ‘Is it the Jews and the Christians?’ He replied, ‘Who else!’” [Bukhari]

We see the fulfillment of this prediction all around us. Muslims imitate non-Muslims in their dress, in the greetings that they use, in the holidays that they celebrate, in their modes of entertainment and even in their definition of right and wrong. It used to happen in the past that defeated nations would start worshipping the gods of their conquerors, believing them to be more powerful and thus responsible for their conquest. Muslims, especially their leaders, seem to be suffering from an inferiority complex at least as powerful as this.

In 637 CE Jerusalem offered a truce, provided that the Khalifa come himself from Madina to sign the treaty. Umar (radi Allahu anhu) set out for Jerusalem with a slave and a camel. The slave and he would take turns riding the camel and they also gave the camel time off from carrying either passenger. When they approached Jerusalem, Umar (radi Allahu anhu) was walking and had to cross through muddy ground, as a result of which his feet and clothes got mud on them. When Umar (radi Allahu anhu) entered Jerusalem, he was holding the rope of his camel leading it and his clothes were patched and muddy.

Abu Ubaidah (radi Allahu anhu), the commander in chief of the Muslim army and himself a very pious man, suggested that he change his clothes so that the people of Jerusalem, accustomed to the pomp and grandeur of kings and emperors, were not dissuaded from handing the keys of Jerusalem over to him. Umar (radi Allahu anhu) hit him hard on the chest and reminded him that they had been a disgraced nation. What had brought them honour and elevated them was Islam; should they seek honour from anything else, they would surely be humiliated again. “The only way for success is the way of the Holy Prophet” he said.

When the people of Jerusalem saw Umar's simplicity they started crying. Another narration states that the books of the Christians foretold 14 patches on the clothes of the person to whom the keys of Jerusalem would be handed. Hazrat Umar's clothes had 14 patches on them.

This is a very important lesson for us. It was Islam that gave Muslims dignity, not entourages, designer suits, name brands, foreign degrees or adopting the sins of the Kuffar. This slavish behaviour of ours has not brought us even an iota of respect. There is nothing but disgrace for us as long as we don’t return to the path trodden by the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam).

I remember the day Margaret Thatcher was elected - as a 17 year old student political activist I was devastated. If she did what she promised I foresaw the harm she would do. Now I look back and I see that I was partially right. She was also a great Prime Minister who did not deserve the Tory party which eventually stabbed her in the back. I still think she got many things wrong but contrasting her with our current crop of Westminster politicians, I cannot but admire her. Sadly her greatest fault was to pave the way for son of Thatcher (Blair) and grandson of Thatcher (Cameron). Anyway I feel sorrow over her passing and wonder if Britain will ever have such a strong Prime Minister again.

U.S. Ranks 19th in Retirement Security

The United States lags behind 18 other countries in retirement security — including less affluent nations, according to a new worldwide index.

The Natixis Global Retirement Index measures how well retired persons fare in 150 nations, based on gauges of health, material well-being, finances, and other factors.

It was released in March by Boston- and Paris-based Natixis Global Asset Management (NGAM), one of the world’s largest investment management firms.

Although the United States is the world’s largest pension market, it lags behind less affluent nations on measures of income and health, Natixis states in a press release.

“While the U.S. leads the world in per-capita health spending, individuals are still required to pay a portion of this expense on their own,” it points out. “That leaves many health costs in the hands of retirees and takes resources away from their other needs.”

The United States, like many other nations, is facing a future with a rapidly aging population, rising life expectancy, and declining birthrates. This is likely to diminish the government’s ability to finance programs such as Social Security and Medicare, leaving a heavier financial burden on retirees.

Another factor: The economic downturn has taken a major toll on retirement savings, and more than half of workers age 30 and older are on a path that would leave them unprepared for retirement.

The top 10 nations in the index of retirement security are all in Europe, with Norway ranked No. 1, followed by Switzerland, Luxembourg, Sweden, Austria, and Finland. Australia is the highest-ranked non-European nation, at No. 11, followed by Israel at 12 and Canada at 13.

The United States at 19 is behind Slovenia (16), Czech Republic (17), and Slovakia (18).

As Prime Minister, Mrs Thatcher successfully took on the overgrown unions that were destroying the country, gave millions of ordinary people unimaginable wealth by letting them buy their council houses, created a dynamic economy that rewarded business and enterprise at all levels, and saved tens of thousands from spending their lives toiling in a coal industry that if it didn't kill them on the job would eventually do so through industrial disease. And in the process effectively stockpiled the UK's coal reserves for future generations when we can no longer buy the stuff more cheaply from abroad, and mining can be more automated.

I never have and probably never will understand why so many people are desperate to celebrate her death. Is it really so important that people should go down coal mines? Or is all the Thatcher hate really a society-level misogyny? Would a male Tory PM have suffered the level of opprobrium that is directed at Thatcher?
