Hey guys, your friend is looking for a job. Any leads would be appreciated.

Maybe somewhere I can make tips. I'm good at pretending to smile and sometimes I can even be borderline charming.

But anything will do, really.

Last week there was an incident in Bath where a young girl was approached by a person in a car seeking information or directions. The girl did the right thing and did not get near the car and later reported the incident. I encourage all parents to have regular conversations with your children about safety matters. Whether it be fire safety at home, stranger safety at home or away, or talks about the dangers and consequences surrounding drug and alcohol use and abuse. I think our homes (parents and guardians) are the number one defense in keeping our children safe.

So here are a couple of tips that you can relay to your children to keep them safe from strangers. Remind them that Maine is one of the safest states to live in but we always need to be prepared. Here are just a few pointers there are so many more that I could give.

1. Remind your children to always be alert and aware of their surroundings. A child is less likely to be caught off guard if they can see it coming. Don't let your child be distracted by devices walking home I.E I-Phone, I Pods with ear buds listening to music.

2. Teach your children to be assertive. Tell them that there body language can make all the difference. A child who looks and acts meek is more vulnerable. Stand up tall and straight make serious eye contact with everyone. Don't keep your hand in your pockets or just crossed across your chest. Your hands should be at your sides or out in front of you.

3. Teach your children to find their voice and use it loud and aggressively. Draw attention in a bad situation by screaming for help, Use language like " Help me your mot my father" "Stop hurting me" "Call the Police please help me." Just plain screaming has found to be ineffective and drowned out by most people.

4. Teach your children to run from danger and head to safety. If you are a girl and wearing heels kick them off and run barefoot. Discuss with them what would a safe place be? A neighbor they know on their route home. A business that is close by. Or maybe to a mother who is walking down the road with her children. In an ideal situation it would be a uniformed Police Officer or Firefighter.

5. Teach a child to use what ever is at their disposal to help protect and defend themselves. I.E Pens, Pencils, Book Bag, Bicycle etc. A child riding a bike should put the bike between him and the stranger.

6. Teach a child to hone in on their senses that if something feels
wrong or awkward they are probably right.

7. Teach your child to never ever get into or close to a strangers car. No rationally thinking adult would approach a child and ask them for directions or to look for a lost animal etc.

8. If a child needs to fight to resist an abduction then they need to give it all they got. They need to have a tough mental mindset. They should use what ever defense and strikes they know that are simple and effective. Keep this in mind "KISS" Keep It Simple Stupid. For a small child it might be a palm heel strike or knee strike to the offenders groin. Foot stomps that scrape down the offenders shins and end up striking the top of their foot. Pinching, scratching, etc. All while verbalizing yelling and screaming help "Your not my father, stranger, call the Police, call 911!" If a child is grabbed in a headlock, bear hug, or other choking type hold teach them to pin their own chin into their chest to help protect their airway for breathing. Then have them latch on to one or two of the offenders fingers and pull it back aggressively they will release or it will snap. The child needs to be aggressive and not comply. Fight with all they got.

Once again we are fortunate we live in Maine one of the safest states in the Nation. The chances of something bad like an abduction are very slim. However if you regularly cover safety matters with your child you help armor them for life.

4-5-13 Tip of the Day: These are not my tips but the tip of another. An expert in fitness for individuals who have autism... Suzanne Gray gives these tips....by the way April is Autism Awareness Month.... I hate awareness or nationality or ethnic background or whatever months...because then it becomes celebrated only during the month Black History month...let's only think of great Africans during February.....anyways I think it's cheesy but it is Autism Awareness month and we should all be aware and non judgmental... anyways the tips...

More than half of the nation’s children with Autism are overweight. Being overweight can cause numerous problems such as: bone and joint issues as well as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This has influenced Suzanne M Gray, a fitness expert, to create exercise programs for individuals with autism.
Gray is the CEO of Right Fit Sport and Wellness Center in Willowbrook, IL, and has been creating fitness programs and working with individuals who have special needs for more than 30 years. She has seen how exercise improves an individuals’ motor skills, muscle tone, and socialization skills. Exercise is also beneficial in eliminating self-destructive and self- stimulating behaviors in children with Autism.
Her latest program, “Five to Stay Alive,” consists of at-home activities recommended for children with autism to help fight obesity. They include:

1. Around the Block. Create a neighborhood path for children to follow and have your child run this path a designated number of times per day. He/she could wear a pedometer to measure steps and calories and track progress.

2. Raise the Bar! You’re a Star! Start with a dowel rod and raise it over head and back down. Eventually this can be substituted for weight bars.

3. Chair Squats. This movement is required for most power moves of the lower extremities and most athletic events.

4. Push-ups. If your child is able, have them do a designated number of push- ups every day.

5. Jumping Jacks. Again, depending on where children are on the spectrum, will make a difference in how many they can do.
Chart all progress on a chart and keep track of repetition and loads. Offer incentives as motivators such as stickers or a fat-free dessert.

Kids with Autism benefit greatly from exercise. A structured routine is essential to see results. Another fitness tip is to combine music and play with exercise because it enhances the child’s sensory response while boosting independence, happiness and self-esteem. “The biggest benefit”, says Gray “is weight loss”
