In 1985 when Paul Hardcastle sang about “the average age of combat troops in Vietnam being exposed to hostile fire every day was n-n-19-19-19”, who would have known he actually prophesying the downfall of Congleton’s valiant U13s in 2013? Stockport are a good team but it was one boy with 19 on his shirt that did the damage and made the difference.
There was little doubt that with all the extra training and Congleton’s improvement over the past few months the home side felt they could get into their first ever final. After two tries in 10 minutes by Stockport, Congleton knew they were up against it but, as they have shown all season, the Bears roared back, getting stuck into the visitors and earned a well worked try by Bolton. Unfortunately earlier in the move Congleton’s fly half, Burkard, went down with an ankle injury and played no further part in the game. Dakin slotted the conversion. While Burkard, Bradley, and, for a few minutes, Fray, left the battle with injuries, it showed that Congleton is very much a squad as players comfortably slotted into different positions.
At three tries to one at the break there was hope and as long as they could suppress Stockport’s fly half – wearing 19 – they could win the match. The first few minutes of the second period were stunning as Congleton’s commitment to repel the enemy invaders made the crowd stare in amazement. Stockport threw everything at the Bear’s line but not only did the defence hold firm they turned it into attack and with some truly great forward driving and handling interplay down the right flank they put Stockport deep into their 22m area. Stockport responded and pushed Congleton back into their half and then, to the home supporters delight, the forwards produced some quick ball for Macarthur to release Bolton in space to race away from the scrambling Stockport defenders. Suddenly it was 14-19 and all to play for…….
Stockport call him their “get out of jail free card” – the fly half with 19 on his back. In a jiffy he got his hands on the ball and exploded and weaved his way through Congleton’s defence to pull the score away once again. It proved to be a significant blow and with two further tries against a tiring but valiant home team the whistle mercifully bought the contest to a close.
Stood behind the posts as the final conversion went over, there were tears, bloody noses and grazed knees and elbows. It was a picture of everything the Bears team stand for – great attitude, commitment, respect for each other and team work. This is not the time to highlight stand out performances as each player knows they put in every ounce of effort they had. It is an opportunity for this great group of players and coaches to take stock of how far they have come. If there were a couple of technical areas that will make a big difference to Congleton it will be improving the contact area (too many times Congleton took the ball in and were turned over or held up) and in holding their defensive and attacking shape.
They will learn from the experience and should set their sights high for next season. With a handful of games before the end of the season, they should go and enjoy themselves. As Paul Hardcastle said in his song of the young soldiers returning from Vietnam “None of them received a hero’s welcome” and that is where we differ: you, the players, were heroes and you can all feel very proud.
