I originally thought Silviniaco Conti would be a certainty for this race as I expected his opposition to be poor, but the line-up is a bit better than I thought it would be so I’m not sure he’s a value bet at his current price. First Lieutenant looks like a good candidate for this, but he had a hard race at Cheltenham which he might take a while to recover from. He’s also never won over further than 2m5f and the distance of this contest is 3m1f. Quito De La Roque would prefer a much softer surface than he’s going to get here and although he did win over C&D on good a few seasons ago, that was a mediocre contest and the form never worked out. I’m not a fan of The Giant Bolster and couldn’t recommend anybody to back him. He’s never won a decent quality contest in his whole career. The one who could be interesting is Cape Tribulation. He has excelled at distances beyond three miles and scored at this festival last season off top weight in a handicap hurdle. He added a Grade 2 to his chase CV this season at Cheltenham and didn’t run badly when fifth in the Gold Cup. Silviniaco Conti looks a very solid candidate, having won the novice race over C&D last season and falling before being asked for his effort in the Gold Cup. As a result he comes here relatively fresh. He’s pretty short in the betting now though and although I think he’ll probably win, I’d rather be on Cape Tribulation each-way at 12/1 than the former at even money.

Very impressed with all things Gillingham FC today. Firstly a great win when others failed. We dominated the game a lot more today and created more real chances than of late ... that can only be a good sign for the 4 remaining matches and an 8 point lead. They did a good job on todays prostate cancer awareness day too. Mentions by both manager and chairman and a nice full page article. The GFC Gems played their part too. Great club and deserve to be champions this year. UTG

Failing to see the need for the cobblers to travel 90mims to Cheltenham the day before and stay in a hotel??? Understand for long hauls but for 100 miles?

Yay! Day off! A few hours kip before heading into town to stroke my imaginary beard and study form for the big race tomorrow. And then stick some wonga on a proper donkey that won't even make it out of the paddock, let alone over the first fence...

Aintree Thursday:
2.00 - Rolling Star was bitterly disappointing in the Triumph hurdle and could well be a mud warrior. Therefore the pick goes to Paul Nicholls IRISH SAINT who was narrowly beaten by the former before at Cheltenham, but can reverse these placings and confirm superiority over Vasco Du Ronceray whom he beat last time out. It can also be noted that the selection bypassed Cheltenham and will be much fresher than all the others mentioned and will improve for better ground described as on the good side of soft. 10/3.
2.30 - An unbelievable card to this race with a few gold cup heroes and an abundance of class. It is impossible to oppose anything but SILVINIACO CONTI if nothing foul has occurred as a result of the fall he had when looming large at Prestbury Park's signature event. The 8/1 for next years Gold Cup will be severely dented should he win well here and he can make these look very average at Even money. First Lieutenant was a distant second to Cue Card earlier at Cheltenham but the form doesn't look anything near the selection and The Giant Bolster has already been defeated by him this year when receiving lots of weight.
3.05 - A potential minefield this one where a lot of well fancied Cheltenham horses meet. The fact Barry Geraghty has jumped ship to Grandouet speaks volumes about the chances of Oscar Whiskey, and the fact Zarkandar is entered gives this field massive depth, but THE NEW ONE seems to have the world of racing at his feet and can really stamp his authority over next years festival markets by landing this. Although an arguably harder race than the one at Cheltenham, his form with the likes of At Fishers Cross and Coneygrey is rock solid and his turn of foot will be hard to cope with if travelling as well as he did at Cheltenham on a flatter track here. 10/3.
4.15 - Although Ruby Walsh elects to ride anther of the Nicholls battalion, TOUBAB seems a lofty 12/1 and is selected each way. An impressive winner last time out, he should have the beating of most of these if travelling and jumping strongly through to the end.
4.50 - Barry and Nicky look to have this one sewn up with CAPTAIN CONAN the 7/4 shot. Despite not seeing out the race last time in the Jewson he was only beaten 5 lengths, and on a flatter less testing track this powerful travelling sort should find it a lot easier this time with a race that lacks any real depth.
5.25 - Im struggling to see why OPEN HEARTED is 12/1 (E/W). Massively impressive last time out and is treated very fairly with a very useful claimer taking off 7 in Nicko De Boinville. Jump on.
DOUBLE - Silviniaco Conti + Captain Conan 9/2
