Five to horses to follow on Saturday - Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor at the Daily Record, puts up five tips at Aintree on Saturday including Seabass for the National. View selections below.
SEABASS (4.15) has been given the ideal preparation for the John Smith’s Grand National and can provide jockey Katie Walsh with her place in history as the first woman rider to win the Aintree showpiece.
Brother Ruby rode Papillon to victory in 2000 for father Ted and Seabass looked poised to give Katie glory 12 months ago when they hit the front two out. Although run out of it up the gruelling run-in by Neptune Collonges and Sunnyhillboy, Seabass posted an excellent effort. This year, after a spin over hurdles, Seabass was handed his Aintree pipe-opener over fences at Fairyhouse at the end of February, running on into third under considerate handling and he is a must for the shortlist.
Ireland has assembled another formidable raiding party and, with the Dessie Hughes team in great nick, Rare Bob is also worth an each-way dabble after being brought down at the fifth fence last year. The handicapper has given 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander an outstanding opportunity (rated 158 here compared to 174 in his pomp at Cheltenham), while Roberto Goldback should go well at a nice price for Nicky Henderson/Barry Geraghty now that he encounters a sounder surface.
SOLWHIT (2.50) and Celestial Halo, who fought out a thrilling finish to the Ladbrokes World Hurdle, lock horns again in the John Smith’s Liverpool Hurdle and the Irish horse can confirm superiority. Solwit’s only previous visit to Liverpool saw him win the 2009 Aintree Hurdle, beating Fiveforthree, and he has form on good ground, too, going down by a neck to Hurricane Fly at the Punchestown festival. African Gold, who travelled and jumped so well at Cheltenham before being outgunned by At Fishers Cross, and impressive Coral Cup hero Medinas, add even more lustre to a fascinating contest.
Dodging Bullets bids to restore his reputation after flopping at Cheltenham and will be one of the market leaders for the opening John Smith’s Mersey Novices’ Hurdle. However, he had a distant view of Grumeti in the Anniversary Juvenile Hurdle here 12 months ago and preference is for UP AND GO (1.45). Donald McCain’s rising star is unbeaten in four completed starts, his latest victory romp coming at Ascot when routing Aaim To Prosper.
McCain, whose family name is so synonymous with Aintree, saddles ever-popular Overturn in the novices’ chase and he should be more at home here than at Cheltenham when so disappointing last time. However, he will have a fight on his hands against Arkle Trophy runner-up BAILY GREEN (2.15) who really served it up to Simonsig after travelling well throughout.
The concluding bumper is always a minefield but Nigel Twiston-Davies’ PURE SCIENCE (5.45) brings solid Cheltenham form to the table, having run sixth to Briar Hill in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper.

The 2013 ‘Cases’ Somerset Rebels get their new season underway with the visit of local rivals, the Plymouth Devils, to the Oaktree Arena on Good Friday (29th), in the 1st leg of a challenge match between the 2 sides, the action getting underway at 7.30pm.
As is the case with the Rebels, Plymouth have a number of ‘new-faces’ in their 2013 line-up compared to the side that finished the 2012 season as the Premier League’s basement club, but not only do they a raft of new riders, they also have a new promotional team at the helm, headed by ex-rider Seemond Stephens.
On the riding front, Plymouth have retained but 2 riders from their 2012 septet, namely ex-Rebel Cory Gathercole, who captains the Devils side, together fellow Australian Todd Kurtz, though Kurtz’s reserve partner, Ben Reade, made 13 guest appearances for the Devonian side during the course of the season.
With Ben Barker having moved on to Ipswich for 2013, the Devils have a new number 1, that being Australian Ty Proctor, who makes a return to the Premier League after riding for Wolverhampton in the Elite League for the past 3 season, albeit he is joining Plymouth in a double-up role, combining his Devils duties with that of Wolves in the Elite League.
The 2013 Plymouth side will see another ex-Rebel in their ranks, Mark Lemon, who rode for Somerset in 2003, the vastly experienced 40 year-old having joined the Devils after spending the last 3 years with Newcastle and is the current Australian team manager.
2008 Swedish under-21 Champion, Ricky Kling, will not only be making his 1st appearance for Plymouth, but Friday will also be his debut riding at Premier League level after spending his entire British career to date in the Elite League, most recently with Poole with whom he won an Elite League Championship runner-up medal last season.
The Plymouth side is rounded out with the final new recruit, Chris Schramm, the Essex-born rider having been a frequent visitor to the Oaktree Arena over the years having ridden for the likes of Newport, Reading and King’s Lynn.
Good Friday’s encounter will mark the Somerset debuts for three of their septet, Australian’s Josh Grajczonek and Nick Morris, who was a member of the Scunthorpe team that narrowly defeated Somerset in last year’s Play-Off Final, together with British Under-19 champion, Stefan Nielsen, who will line up in one of the 2 reserve berths.
The four returnees, Captain Jason Doyle, Alex Davies, Kyle Newman and Tom Perry will all be looking to avenge last season’s agonising single point defeat at the hands of Scunthorpe in the Championship Final, with the pundits having installed the Rebels as the pre-season favourites to lift the Championship crown this time around.
“I have to admit that I don’t like having the ‘tag’ of being favourite’s hanging around our necks,” said Rebels team manager Garry May, “but I suppose it does mean that the majority of the pundits think that we have got our team building spot on, and of course I would love it if we lived up to those expectations.”
“As ever though, there are many factors that can determine how a team’s season can pan out, injuries and how you cope with them being the major one, but as things stand I think we have a more than decent septet and one that has the capabilities to be up there once again challenging for honours.”
Teams:
Somerset – Jason Doyle [c] (9.17), Nick Morris (8.00), Josh Grajczonek (7.44), Alex Davies (5.69), Kyle Newman (5.31), Tom Perry (3.53), Stefan Nielsen (3.00); Team manager: Garry May
Plymouth – Ty Proctor (9.21), Mark Lemon (7.27), Ricky Kling (6.61), Cory Gathercole [c] (6.33), Chris Schramm (4.91, Todd Kurtz (4.38), Ben Reade (3.00); Team manager: Lee Trigger
