So I've noticed something lately and that is that the vanguard of the army of ineffectual hippies has drastically changed in membership. The dirty and unkempt pot smoking, trust fund, white bread 20 something's that used to make up it's core have all switched over to the equally repulsive "hipster" camp. White kids with dirty dreadlocks are not showing solidarity with their minority brethren but are all doing it to be ironic or to fit in with all the other smelly, pot head, white kids who are all trying to be different or unique. The torch of the peace loving, acid washed brained hippie has been passed to what used to be the elite of the hipster brigade- fat girls and gay guys. Because donning vintage clothes, fake wings, and dancing around in a park to shitty, impromptu drum circle music is not just something you do because you are pathetic and starved for attention (not to mention your father's approval), but because it brings world peace damn it! At least that's according to all the gay dudes and fat chicks spinning in circles in Forsyth Park.

No action on UTME, NECO yet, says FG

Worried by the anxiety that has trailed the purported scrapping of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME and the National Examination Council, NECO, the Federal Government has cleared the air on the matter, saying that no decision has been taken onthe matter.
Many groups including members of the National Assembly and labour unions have already kicked against the planned scrapping of the institutions, which have been providing services forstudents across the country.
Although the government is yet to issue a white paper on the recommendation of the Oronsaye Report, which recommended the reduction of government agencies to a reasonable number to save costs, a top government official last week leaked a report to state House correspondents, claiming that NECO and UTME had been laid to rest.
But the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, told Vanguard in an exclusive interview in Abuja that thegovernment was yet to take any decision on the issue and asked Nigerians not to panic.
According to Wike, it was improper for people to spread rumours about what the administration had not taken a firm decision on.
Wike said, “It is true thatthere was a committee setup to issue a white paper on the Oronsaye Report and up till now the committee has not presented its report to the government for examination and adoption to warrant the kind of rumours making the rounds and causing anxiety in the country.
“What Nigerians should believe and expect from the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan is nothing but the best at all times. This government means well forthe education sector and will therefore not do anything that will not be inthe best interest of all Nigerians.
“If the government wants to take any decisionon JAMB, NECO and the rest, such actions will be weighed and taken with the overall best interest of all and I can assure Nigerians that no such action has yet been taken.”
Wike explained that the government was rather working hard to repositionthe education sector by providing necessary facilities and personnel for all the unity schools in the country as well as strengthen tertiary education to make it moreuseful to Nigerians.
According to the minister, the overall goal of the ministry was to meet the Millennium Development Goal and pave the way forsome of Nigeria’s universities to meet international standards and be counted among thebest in the world.
Wike pointed out that the present administration wasalso working hard to clear the rot in the education system by ensuring regular inspection of schools and training of teachers and other operators of the system to enable them to cope with the modern techniques of teaching andlearning.
“The situation in the Nigerian education system is taking a better shape that it was when we first came in and we are not going to rest until we sanitise the situation for the interest of the nation and its people because education holds the key for the nation’s advancement,” Wike stated.
Vanguard learnt from competent sources that a crucial meeting of heads ofparastatals had been slated for today to enablethe administration to deliberate on the outcomeof the Orosonya report, with a view to streamliningthe agencies with a view to issuing a white paper.
The meeting, which is to be presided over by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, will seek the inputs of stakeholders to ensure a hitch-free implementation of the agencies to merged or scrapped.

VARIOUS narratives about Nigerians resident in different countries abroad show how individuals are constantly subjected to various levels of inhuman treatment while in pursuit of existence. Little wonder some Nigerians are of the opinion that it is time Nigerians in Diaspora began dreaming of actualizing decent lives back in Nigeria.

Recalling some of the awful experiences that a large number of Nigerians, who run businesses in the commercial city of the Republic of China (Guangzhou) go through on daily basis, Tony (other names withheld for security reasons) a China-Nigeria business tycoon stated, "as a matter of fact, on daily basis, Nigerians, particularly men are actually in deep sadness and regret over the continuous unfair treatment they receive from the Chinese.

"As a businessman/investor in China, I believe that Nigerian businessmen in China are undeserving of some of the regulations which are unfavourable to our trade relations with the Chinese government." It has also been discovered that China refuses to extend the visas of Nigerians in their country for business and this to a "large extent, cripples our business ventures which is a situation that deserves dialogue between Nigerian ambassador to China and Chinese visa regulating authorities," Tony said.

Issues of unscrupulous Nigerians: Taking Nigerian nationals as a case study, Tony noted that though there are some unscrupulous Africans residing in China who are causing problems for the serious and well focused Nigerians in China, it is not enough to place Nigerians under such ridicule which should only be associated with nefarious activities.

Nigerians detained in Chinese prisons: A China based Nigerian based university official via telephone conversation with Vanguard Consular Advisory also disclosed that there are over 300 Nigerians in Guangzhou prison on detention due to the expiration of their visa and is bewildered to affirm that the Nigerian embassy is not interfering in a case as minor as getting the Chinese government to extend her national visa where necessary.

"Why is the embassy of Nigeria in China not showing any concern about the welfare of their citizen or is there any political undertone here? For God sake, there should be a positive action towards understanding the importance of one Nigerian citizen in any foreign country. We should not be treated like sheep without a shepherd, after all Nigeria is not worse than China in terms of corruption"

In furtherance to his narratives, he lamented about the unfair treatment he received from an immigration officer in one of his trips to Europe, not withstanding the positive contributions the teeming population of Nigerians make to the economy of these countries they reside in.

"I just came back from a trip within Europe and as usual, Immigrations spent more time with me when they saw my Nigeria passport. Imagine having to go through series of questionings from immigrations even on arrival from a domestic flight within that country just because I am a Nigerian.

How demeaning. I vividly remember the times when the arrival of a Nigerian to a country like China for instance, is being celebrated, he explained, adding that " If you take away Nigerians living in Guangzhou, China, it will have a negative effect on the Chinese economy which would take a long time to reverse."

Searching for greener pastures which may not be greener on the other side, is worth the while, but intending travellers must be wise in their decision about leaving Nigeria in pursuit of such greener pastures.

Responding to the issue of wanting to leave Nigeria at all cost, Tony said: "Advancing to China for business related matters is tempting but at the same time can mean putting one’s life at risk because you want to leave Nigeria at all cost. I always wonder at times if we actually think before embarking on such trips because the money invested in procuring the necessary documents."
