For the first time in my life, we are having a fire in the wood stove the day before my birthday. What a cold miserable night outside. But oh so nice here in the house. Looking forward to a great evening of backgammon and Final Four b-ball. Oh yeah, and the Tigers won. My night is made!

Another good day for a Revolution
I’m told the Chinese have a saying that to feel alive you should try something different every day. Last night a friend invited me to come over for dinner with friends, play a board game and watch Game of Thrones. I never heard of the game (Settlers of Catan) and have never seen the show so I consulted my inner Chinaman and we went exploring new worlds down the street. A table full of wonderfully interesting mostly computer nerds, 30 years younger than I trying to teach pops a board game and how to use the dice to leverage probability to buy property – our own little Games of Thrones waiting under the flat screen for our program to begin. I didn’t tell them I learned about probability from Jim Clark, the guy who started Silicon Graphics, the Apple computer of it’s day, who built the first 3-D computer graphics engine, started Netscape, the first commercial internet browser and would routinely kick my ass at backgammon until he got bored beating me night after night and one drunken night broke down and unlocked for me the mysteries of the dice. In a flash I saw the inner workings of the Universe. I saw how smart people, really smart people like him could change the world using only probability a few decades of really hard work, become fabulously wealthy and then could afford to sit around and teach board games to people like me. It literally changed the way I saw the world - to Jim it wasn’t’ rocket science but in college he did work on computers of the Saturn V that sent man to the Moon. He took his games seriously and so did I, but I noticed I’ve changed a lot since I played with him. The game last night was like Monopoly except this game was designed around the extraction business, farms and their development, to win you had to build settlements and cities and connect them with roads to the resources. Take nature and build stuff on it scoring points along the way. Person with the most stuff wins. Except in this game building in the desert was worth nothing, never mind the solar potential when there’s ore to mine. I felt like we were the Koch brothers and Monsanto plotting world domination. This is a game where you got points for building the longest road, didn’t matter where it was going, it didn’t have to connect a school or a hospital to a settlement – you just had to build it – game probably conceived by a mafia cement plant owner. And of course you could only acquire more properties along the way at the expense of your neighbors.
I mention dice were involved?
I felt bad kicking those young butts because I was thinking about making another game, one where everybody had to win or everybody lost. One where you had to lift your neighbor out of poverty before you both could buy coats to stay warm, a game where the woods were full of something besides just lumber, they were full of nesting birds and other creatures who called it home and before you could harvest trees and build your home you first had to make sure there were migration corridors in the canopies across the roads for golden lion tamarin. If you polluted the salmon stream with runoff from your mine you would lose your home, food or respect of your neighbors. A game where you collected points by building community, not destroying the commons for personal gain. A game where you had to leave it just has you found it so the next generation could play with the same resources. It gives me no pleasure these days to win when my neighbor loses – I’ve realized were all playing the same game – it’s a great game – we just need to change the rules. Never got to see Games of Thrones, Tevo wasn't working but the Chinaman and I have something to look forward to next week..
