A bridge too far for Priorymen as injuries and absences take their toll on tough away schedule
Guisborough Town’s tremendous recent run of four successive victories faltered as the first two of four consecutive tough away games resulted in narrow but disappointing defeats.
Optimism was high in the Guisborough camp after the four straight wins had propelled them up to ninth position in the league – well on track to achieve the club’s pre-season target of finishing in the Top 12.
But after narrowly losing 1-0 at Bedlington Terriers in midweek, a makeshift Guisborough side travelled to Shildon on Saturday with 10 regulars missing through either injury or work commitments.
And on top of that, half the Guisborough team that took the field at Shildon were also nursing injuries and - in the words of Town Manager Chris Hardy - these handicaps proved a “bridge too far” for the Priorymen.
Commented Hardy: “The first half proved a tight affair with little goalmouth action at either end. In the second half, Shildon came out looking the better side and capitalised on two defensive mistakes to finish worthy 2-0 winners.
“On reflection, this was a game that was a bridge too far for my team today, with no fewer than 10 players missing either through work or injury, forcing us into playing four or five players with injuries. This took its toll particularly in the second half when our overall play became poor and Shildon deserved their victory in the end,” added a disappointed but not downhearted Hardy.
Guisborough’s man-of-the-match against Shildon was Luke Bythway. Despite the two defeats in the space of three days, Town remain in 10th position – but things are becoming extremely tight in that area of the league table, with only six points separating 10th and 15th positions.
Guisborough now turn their sights to their third away trip on the trot when they make the short journey to arch derby rivals Marske United on Monday, 8 April (kick-off 7.30pm) who will be looking to avenge the narrow 1-0 defeat they suffered at Guisborough on Easter Monday.
Town boss Chris Hardy continues to have to grapple with injuries and availability problems, with Jamie Poole, Joel Guy, Austin Johnston, Ben Escritt, Paul Roddam, Mikey Roberts, Craig Bishop and Mark Casey all struggling to shake off injuries and Bradley Halliday and Lewis Wood not available for selection. On the plus side, returning to the Town squad are Liam O'Sullivan, Liam McPhillips, Gary Wood and O’Riordan.
Meanwhile, as part of a significant programme of special activities to mark Guisborough Town FC’s forthcoming 40th anniversary since formation, Guisborough Museum (situated at the rear of Sunnyfield House, Westgate) has very kindly agreed to display a ‘40 Years of Guisborough Town FC’ exhibition. Entry is free and open Thursdays and Saturdays 10-4pm throughout April to October

Hello Ya Bunch Of Fitties!
Sorry things have been a little quiet on the page over the past week or so: I’ve been having some time away over the Easter holidays before I start my training for the 2014 Wales Ironman. For those of you who don’t know, the Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile (3.9 kilometre) swim, a 112 mile (180 kilometre) bike ride and a 26.2 mile (42.1 kilometre) run. All three disciplines follow on from each other with a strict 17 hours time limit to complete it all. I’ve given myself a year and six months to train for this massive physical undertaking, which is more than enough time to get my head around the distances.
So how are we all doing? Are all you first time marathon runners getting nervous? With only 6 days to go until this year’s Brighton marathon and 13 days until London, at this stage in the game there’s often a tendency to try and cram in extra miles. Beware of this: first time marathoners are the worst offenders. I’ve seen many runners pull out of a race during these last few weeks because they picked up an injury due to overtraining. Let me make it absolutely clear! It does not matter what you do now; training is over and you should have enough miles in the tank to help you complete the 26.2 miles. If, for whatever reason, you have been unable to run as much as you had hoped there is absolutely no point in getting yourself stressed about it. Stressing yourself out could make you ill.
If you are suffering from injury, niggles, pains or maybe you feel overly tired, I would highly recommend you stop running for what little time is left and allow your body some well-earned rest before the big day. It is much better to start the race feeling fresh and ready to rock the concrete than burnt out carrying an injury which will, let me tell you, be a total nightmare for you during the race and will make for a very unpleasant journey. You will not lose any fitness by having two weeks off from running.
If you have any last minute marathon worries, please do not hesitate to contact me either through the page or by e mail. peter@wholeworks.co.uk
Healthy Regards
