Today was the first of the summer, Sunday series races,( do you think if we say summer enough times it will happen? No neither do I). With Miss baker still out of action, the three amigos that drove me around yesterday, turned up to race, and the newest crew member, Filey SC answer to Ben Ainslie, also turned up. Having been invited for the winter series, many weeks ago, this was the first chance we had for Carl Whitehead, (Google him, it works) to have a play.
It wasn't as cold as yesterday, but it wasn't warm, I think Ranulph may have stayed on board today, but he might have asked for a hot water bottle.
All the competitors seemed to have more crew aboard today, albeit some of Bruce's crew on G spot, spotted walking down the pontoons looking like they’d just fallen out of the Casino. Jacks, you know who you are.
Onto the race track, and here's the black Swan moment (you have googled it), old bandy handed the helm to Mr Whitehead. Now you don't see that everyday, in fact I've never seen it in the 2 years we've been together, apart from lady helm and cadet, and then it under duress cos he couldn't fit into a dress or short trousers!
it wasn't handed over without conditions though, “You might have the stick, but I'm in charge” in his best Bruce Forsyth impersonation, (You will have to Google that)
Fortunately the race station had sorted power today, so the race sequence was as advertised. we still had the Cork 1720 starting with the 707, (I need to get old bandy to have a word with the committee about that, oh, he is on the committee, he must have been away when that was voted on.)
With Carl on the helm, slightly more aggressive than old bandy (think Genghis Kahn to Ghandi) we had a good start, forcing the 1720 into penalties as we rounded the first mark. Robin Gray, helm on the 1720 was not happy, ( he would have been less happy if he’d realized old bandy had put the spoof parking ticket on his car yesterday!)
We were first around the wheatcroft mark,, then an epidemic of Myopic affliction set in, , (Google it) , basically they couldn't see the mark, none of them.
The other 707, with Carls brother in law helming Grand Day out, and sister crewing second fiddle, overtook us. After that it was a procession to the finish.
Outwardly Carl remained calm, inwardly the fact his sister and brother in law were ahead was consuming him like big Mick devours a big Mac.
We were last, and the crew could not read the compass of the boat in front today.
Personally i think Carl threw it so old bandy didn't look like a complete Div. It doesn't take a lot. But i think he did enough to unsettle the opposition!!!!!!!!
