WONDERFUL WINTER WEEKEND IN MARATHON
Even though the official ‘Winterfest’ took a breather this year, there were still plenty of activities taking place in Marathon over the February ‘Family Day’ long weekend. It was a beautiful winter weekend to take advantage of many of the great activities – indoor and out – that took place in the community.
On the Friday and Saturday evening, St. John’s United Church successfully undertook their bid to entertain the masses with their dinner theatre offering, ‘His Majesty’s Feast: A Medievel Murder Mystery’. The four-course, five act evening was fully enjoyed by the 100 in attendance each evening.

The Marathon Sno-Kickers – one of the few active sled clubs in the region – held their Annual Poker Run on Saturday. Over 40 participants started at Boo Boo’s (formerly Hilltop) Restaurant on Highway 17 and finished their run at the Royal Canadian Legion. In first place was Sylvain Dunn, Dale Schwantz came in second while Jay Hancherow placed third.

The 24th Annual Stan McDougall Memorial Bonspiel was held over the 15th and 16th of February with sixteen teams from the region participating. A huge force in the history of the Marathon Curling Club, Mr. Stan McDougall was likely smiling down on this particular weekend as his great-grandson, DJ Verin, was one of the players on the winning team. Skip Tyler Davis, Nathan Davis and lead Duncan Quick were the other team members who shared in the win with DJ. DJ is the grandson of Vince and Doreen (nee McDougall) Maure.
On the Family Day Monday, the curling club swung their doors open for an afternoon of free curling. Practice, instruction or just to have fun – everyone was invited out to give curling a try. Snacks and drinks were available.

Meanwhile, over at the Marathon Cross Country Ski & Snowshoe Club, the annual loppet was underway on the Sunday. Distances for bunnies, jackrabbits, track attack and adults challenged all who are participated.
On the Family Day Monday, the entire community was invited out to try out cross-country skiing and snowshoeing – for free! The clubhouse and the trails were buzzing with activity as almost every piece of rental equipment was being put to use. The town as well offered a free swim and movie on Family Day.

Overall, it was a good weekend in Marathon to get out and enjoy family, community and celebrate winter!

Thank you all for attending our 2nd annual bike blessing and poker run yesterday. The weather forecasters got it wrong again, but everyone that rode seemed to have a great time. A big thanks to the AMVET posts for their hospitality and providing free food. Several hundred dollars were raised for "Wounded Warrior".

GREAT IDEA ALERT!!!!!!!!!!

I just played golf the other week at this course that was situated in the middle of a retirement community for the elderly and I thought what about a community for young people!!!!

It would pretty much be like a college atmosphere. Housing, food court, gym, mini putt, tennis courts, basketball courts, yoga, cafe, coffee shops, massage places, spas, huge pools, bars, clubs, golf course, library, computer center, farmers market, central park, track and field, shopping center, pool hall, restaurants, and pretty much anything you could think of that is fun and entertaining.

Also it would be like a school but only have classes for useful fun things like cooking, wood shop, life economics, maybe life handicapping and odds making, dog training, yoga, and any stuff we currently pay for to learn a skill.

If would be awesome cause like you would be living in an area that is already close to home, less DUI, more fit cause you would walk or bike it everywhere, people would be more social just because the environment you would be in, and you will already be in a place that young people want to be in,... a setting with other young fun people!

I also think this would be a good premise for a new movie. K that is all
