It was snowing steadily in central London at lunchtime yesterday. Yet, almost incredibly, the domestic cricket season is about to start. Play is scheduled from Durham in the north down to Hove in the south. Next week, the county championship begins. From one point of view, cricket deserves to suffer for this absurdly premature start to the season, which has stealthily advanced in recent years for commercial reasons. In another perspective, however, the idiotic hardiness of playing the summer game in the current freezing conditions has a certain heroic magnificence. As such, it deserves to be rewarded. The most practical way of doing that is to amend laws 40 and 41 of the game to allow fielders to wear gloves when the temperature falls below 10C. Bowlers, of course, would have to continue bare-handed, but if cricket is to be played in what is still essentially winter, fielders must be allowed to protect themselves from both frostbite and the ball.

What this Cardinal National Championship would mean to me: I can remember the day my parents told us we were moving to a small town in Western Ky, and the nervousness I felt thinking we as a family wouldn't fit in. I was right on some level, my parents were huge drinkers and the town was dry, we were Catholic and most people were Baptist, and the worst of all we were UL fans and everyone else (with the exception of a few) were UK fans. UK fans to the core. We were proud of being Cards but didnt really show our colors too much. I remember my parents driving to every Louisville football game, every basketball game and how much joy they had doing this.. 1986 rolled around and I remember sitting in our living room alone watching UL win the National Championship and instead of going crazy I sat alone in the chair right in front of the tv crying. I wasn't crying because they won, I was crying because I knew how proud my parents were going to be! My dad is a UL graduate and played football at UL and most importantly worked his ass of to attend college much less play a sport. That moment is when I became a true Louisville Cardinal. But as the years went by I realized how much basketball meant to our County and submersed myself in high school basketball. College came and yes I did the unthinkable and attended UK but still always loved my Cards. It wasn't until my early 20's that I realized how important and how much my love of sports and UL could affect my relationship with my parents as well as my family. I began to attend games and go to family football and basketball parties and really enjoyed myself and a the while gaining a new closeness and respect for my family. You see, I don't have a man in my life nor a child so this outlet allowed me to fill a void that I had. UL sports has given me something to invest in, to root for and to have something in common with some of the people I love the most! So IF we win this National Championship it would mean the world to me to see my mom, Dad, Aunt Randi and Uncle Jimmy enjoy one more great moment in UL sports! Almost a thank you to them for allowing me and exposing me to one of my greatest loves in sports and the University of Louisville! GO Cards!
