This Day in History: President Andrew Jackson becomes the first President ever to be censured by Congress for his refusal to turn over documents related to his disastrous dismantling of the Bank of the United States which later caused the Panic of 1837, one of the worst depressions in economic activity the country had ever seen, 1834; Franco and the Fascists- with the help of the Germans and Italians- declare victory in the Spanish Civil War, an horrific episode in their history which caused the deaths of over 1 million people and widespread destruction of homes and buildings, giving rise to Picasso's masterpiece "Guernica", 1939; President Dwight D. Eisenhower dies after a long and stellar career, first rising to high rank in the U.S. Army after World War I then gaining command over all Allied forces during World War II, defeating Hitler's death machine in "Operation Overlord", the greatest naval assault in world history, afterwards retiring in peace to a small farm near Gettysburg, Pa. where he lived his final years painting beautiful landscapes and writing his memoirs, 1969; the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor fails- the first time a major mechanical problem affected a U.S. nuclear plant, scaring millions around the country, the situation inflamed by the release of the movie "The China Syndrome" around the same time, causing near panic as authorities tried to calm a hesitant public into accepting the same source that France- a very liberal country- has used to produce nearly 80% of their electricity for decades, nuclear power, but the incident sufficiently alarmed the country so that no nuclear plant has been built in over 30 years, 1979

I have just found out while doing geneology, I have several veterans in my tree. I have one soldier in the British Army that fought during the rev war and two Americans that fought in the same war. Then I found two Union soldiers. One served in the 137th PA for 9 months and another in the 1st WV Artillery Battery A. Very interesting...

I have found another cause to pickup on. I found out that the 15 th Alabama does not have a monument at Gettysburg Pa. The goal here is to get one erected in the location where the regiment was at during the assault on Chamberlain's extreme left flank. Anyone who has heritage or wants to make sure all men are honored for their sacrifices please feel free to contact me.

If anyone in the group has children at Solomon Plains Junior High School, in the Northwest Area School District, or Hazelton School District, your children are being taught by a teacher in the COMMON CORE pilot program....

Meredith Falchek, a science teacher at Solomon Plains Junior High School, was one of 20 teachers to participate in the Pennsylvania Department of Education Literacy Design Collaborative at the Luzerne County Intermediate Unit 18.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded Pennsylvania a grant to improve students' literacy skills at the middle and high school levels through a planned professional development initiative in which secondary, content-area teachers learned about, implemented and assessed the results of student literacy tasks designed to achieve college and career ready writers. The teachers developed common task-based formative assessments using the Literacy Design Collaborative framework, merging the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in different subject areas to develop high-level reading, writing, and thinking skills.

Falchek's work, in collaboration with Wyanita Edwards from Northwest Area School District and Robin Frask from Hazleton Area School District, has been selected by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to be included in a collection of task-based assessments and exemplars that will be accessible across the state for use by educators working to implement the Common Core State Standards.
